My e-mail was just read on CNN by Cafferty
The question was, "Should the U.S. cut off funding for Iraq reconstruction and instead pay for Hurricane Recovery for Katrina?"

I wrote:

"Yes! The reconstruction funding is a waste since as soon as something is built, it is destroyed. Not to mention the billions of dollars "lost" over there. We SHOULD pay for Hurricane Katrina recovery right away. How long has it been since Bush promised to spend "whatever it takes" to rebuild down there? Just another broken promise."

Not taking anything away from the Bears defense, but the officials must have been Diebold employees.

37. sorry, but i strongly disagree ...
the support for the victims of Hurricane Katrina has been inhumane ... it has been un-American ... it has been abysmal, anemic and appalling ...

but i think the right answer to the question is that the choice between two very critical spending alternatives is bullshit ... what they're essentially asking is: which group of poor, suffering people should we screw? it's crap ...

we destroyed the entire infrastructure of a country that never attacked us ... we have a huge responsibility to help rebuild Iraq ... and this business that "those stupid Iraqis will just destroy everything" is also nonsense ... there's no denying the violence and destruction is a huge problem but that doesn't mean we shouldn't help with the rebuilding of schools and hospitals and sanitation systems ... we are morally obligated to do so ...

we should not allow ourselves to be channeled into their narrow little boxes ... why should we allow them to pit one group against another as if the only way to help people in New Orleans was to screw the Iraqis? how about some real cuts in those oil subsidies instead of the half-way measures they're trying to pass? why do we need to have a defense budget larger than the entire rest of the world COMBINED? why do we need tax cuts for the top 1% of income earners? why do we need to give special "tax discounts" for investment gains? get the idea?

i disagree strongly with the entire premise of the question! it's a sucker's question ...

the right answer was that the choice is garbage and the question is bogus ... we have a huge responsibility to the people of New Orleans to help them rebuild their city and their lives and the same is true for the Iraqi people ...

38. I think I prefer we focus on New Orleans currently
because the environment is too volatile in Iraq; progress evaporates with each explosion. I agree that we are responsible for rebuilding the infrastructure of Iraq, but at this point we may as well set the money in a big pile and blow that up. I think we owe New Orleans and the people there in a big way and it is long overdue.

40. even if i agreed with the argument that nothing is being rebuilt in Iraq
and i don't, the question is still crap ... it is a false choice ... it implies we can only help the people of New Orleans if we screw the Iraqis ... that is just utter nonsense ... there are plenty of other sources for the necessary funds ...

so, if you were to argue that we should not currently be spending a penny in Iraq because of the violence, that's a SEPARATE ISSUE ... when you set it up as an either-or, as the question did, you are creating a false reason for cutting off funds to Iraq ... the greater point is that there is no excuse for not rebuilding New Orleans and the reconstruction funds for Iraq is not an excuse either ... again, there are many other sources of funds ... i don't agree that we should not be spending funds NOW on rebuilding the more stable parts of Iraq, but, even if i did agree, i would not accept the premise of the question ...

this is the classic "it's your choice - which one of your kids should i kill?" - that's no choice at all ...

41. oh, I agree it's a bullshit question
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 11:50 PM by AtomicKitten
It is not an either/or proposition in spite of the choices proffered. I never suggested we cut off funding. I would say, however, it is disgraceful that the Iraqis still don't have power and clean water in many places. I just question the point of pouring money into Iraq right now while it is on fire upside-down in a ditch. Stabilization first, then rebuild.

We, of course, can do both. My heart just goes out to New Orleans because virtually nothing is being done by our government there.

49. I disagree with YOU because...
my point is that our money is going to waste in Iraq. Every time we build something there it is destroyed again and again. We need to rebuild New Orleans as Bush promised. Iraq is not ready for rebuilding anything. We're throwing money away there rigiht now.

53. Cafferty emailed me back and I was outraged...
Last week he said that the democrats were telling lies when they said that they would work a five day week. That they took Monday off..(Martin Luther Kings birthday holiday) and they were going to take a four day weekend. Well I sent the first email and told him he should check his facts. They indeed were going to take a four day weekend but that was in regards to a republican cacus retreat that they had taken for decades. And that the following week the democrats would take their cacus retreat.

The email he sent back said that the dems were supposed to work a five day week. He worked five days why couldn't they. blah blah blah.

I started to reply but said, if he was such a grouch that he did not look into the original story than he wasn't worth it. I googled. I did not find one report or news item where Jack Cafferty complained that the republicans had taken a four day cacus retreat for at least the previous six years. Why is he making a fuss now. I used to think he was unbiased but I have changed my mind and post this in response to any remark about Cafferty. He is as brainwashed as all the media when it comes to the dems.
