WH and Al Gonzales Prepare to Launch Whitewater II w/ new Prosecutor
It is all there, as plain as day for anyone who cares to see. Faux maverick Arlen Spectre did the dirty work so that another Faux maverick John McCain could improve his presidential chances next year. I am referring to the provision Specter inserted into the Patriot Act that lets the Acting Whitehouse Counsel Al Gonzales fire any federal prosecutor he wants and replace him or her with any other lawyer he wants.

He has fired and replaced a number of lawyers, including the Duke Cunningham prosecutor, but the mst notable position is one in Arkansas. Back in December a very special lawyer was assigned to the role of federal prosecutor. Here is how Mother Jones describes him.

http://www.motherjones.com/mojoblog/archives/2007/01/3279_the_mysterious_1.html

"A quick perusal of Griffin’s resume shows that his more-or-less exclusive vocation has been doing opposition research on Democrats on behalf of the Republican Party. Until recently, he was head of opp research at the White House, working directly for Karl Rove. In 1999 and 2000, he was deputy research director for the Republican National Committee. In 2002 he returned as research director for the national GOP and stayed on for the next three years.

"Before getting involved formally in oppo research he worked in what you might call de facto oppo research positions. In 1995 and 1996 he was associate independent counsel in the Henry Cisneros investigation. And after that he headed up to the Hill to work for Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) investigating political contributions from Asian-Americans to Bill Clinton.

"Oh, and I forgot to mention, according to Time, back in 2000, when he was in charge of digging up dirt on Al Gore, he apparently had a poster hanging on the wall behind his desk which read: “On my command — unleash hell on Al.”'

Now, why would the White House assign such a valuable fellow the job of persecuting Democrats in Arkansas? What prominent Democrats hail from that state? What Democrat may stand in the way of John McCain becoming president in 2008, issuing pardons as needed to Bush and Co, sealing Bush administration documents and continuing the War in Iraq (and Iran) as Bush/Cheney want it waged?

I do not need to answer that question,. I will propose the solution. Alberto Gonzales has been a disgrace to his office. This kind of abuse of power would not be possible if the nation had a real attorney general. It is the duty of Congress to impeach him. John Conyers is planning to call him before the House Congressional Committee to investigate the NSA spying. This is not enough. One of the grounds for impeachment which I listed last fall was Al Gonzales stated threat towards members of Congress that he would abuse the powers of his office to blackmail them (see below). He is doing that right now!

The Case for the Impeachment of Al Gonzales

I'm sure they're preparing for those possibilities also. They seem to always have a plan.

6. I would bet money that he will be as quite as a mouse, until and IF Hillary
becomes the Dem candidate. IMHO, the Repugs want to run against Hillary and any news of a new Whitewater will turn off Dem voters in the primary. Just IMHO.

25. You have to hand it to republicans,
they could take an issue like Hillary's Whitewater, or make a war heroe like Kerry look foolish.

Where the dems haven't yet made PNAC an issue.

I would love to see a TV ad with all our 2008 hopefuls...standing together proud and strong...

Each candidate would have a chance to say something..

It could start out with..."We decided to go into our election campaign war chests to bring America the truth"....

...Then let the truth flow....it would be music to my ears.

7. The Saturday Night Massacre on steroids.
The mafia has nothing on the Bush gang. Amateurs. Why take a risk putting a hit on your enemies, when you can write laws to legalize your crimes, and remove judges and prosecutors who might get in your way?

11. The Statute of Limitations?
IMO, hasn't any and all of the charges which might or could be brought against the Clintons and their associates by this time become time barred? Clinton's have not been residents of Arkansas for at least six years. So....what charge is it that could be investigated and brought within the SOL?

22. Mudslinging has no statue of limitations. In fact,,,
this may actually be more valuable! If some story comes up there will be no formal investigation, no sworn testimony, no forensic accounting or evidence-gathering. Just a bunch of people claiming to have seen or heard something.

Rumors can fly, with the ending "but since it happened X years ago, we couldn't try the Clintons anyway."

There is also no law on how old the mud you're slinging can be!

13. Are you sure it's not to go after Wes Clark? Clark is the unbeatable candidate...
not the candidates that already have people who hate them.

Fact:

Some people hate anything associated with Bill Clinton (Hillary)

Some people hate trial lawyers and millionaires (Edwards)

Some people hate African Americans (Obama)

Some people would not vote for a woman (Hillary)

Clark is not rich, was never a trial lawyer, did not protest the Viet Nam war, was never married to Bill, is not African American AND

drumroll

He is a man's man. He is a guy that has shot a lot of guns and won't look stupid when he goes duck hunting during the campaign. I bet he doesn't windsurf either.

Not that I give a rat's ass about the above negatives, but some mindless voters do.

16. Or perhaps - in position to go after *any* dem who happens
to be gaining momentum at any time.

Last time around folks seemed to think that some dems would be 'safe' from RW smear attacks. bah! They will go after ALL dems. It is what they do. Better to expect it and be prepared to counter and to counter attack.

17. sure they will go after whoever gets the nomination but some candidates will
be easier to smear than others

Edwards equals "frivolous lawsuit" memme for instance

Tucker Carlson disparaged one of Edwards cases by calling it the "jaccuzzi case"

18. Perhaps the Administration fears investigations and prosecutions of its crimes
more than it fears Hillary Clinton. Just a thought.

With all the secret powers the Clintons seem to have lately, you'd think they turned into Karl Rove.

because you just knew that the second the lights go out, you'll be popped by somebody.

That is going to be the rest of Alberto's life, I suspect. The same can be said for Rummy.

21. K & R. These bastards must be stopped
Can't the Congress change this law and eliminate these firings of those doing their jobs (finding criminals and prosecuting them whether their Dems of Repugs)? Shouldn't it be illegal to then appoint political operatives into into prosocutorial roles --whose job it is to take heat off the Repugs and take aim at the Dems?

Nazis!

29. The House or Senate could write a new bill
...that removes the changes made by Specter, but the White House could easily veto it. I doubt more than a couple of Repubs would vote to override Bush the Lesser. They're too afraid of the BFEE.
