If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time By Nancy Greggs
I hate to admit it, but with the Democrats in power for only a matter of days, I’m already waxing nostalgic for the heady times when the Republicans were running things.
Times were great back then, and other than the constant threat of being blown off the face of the earth, we had it pretty good.
There was literally no end to the money. It flowed like water into the Iraq war, to the point that when billions went missing, nobody even bothered to even ask where the money went. Halliburton was raking it in, and we could afford to give tax subsidies to the oil companies even though they were making record profits.
There were tax cuts for billionaires and corporations – hell, we were so awash in greenbacks, politicians were encouraged to build bridges to nowhere in a last-ditch attempt to rid us of the stuff.
All that’s changed now; apparently the country ran out of money the second the Democrats took charge. That must be the case, because every time they propose something, the GOP ask where they’re going to get the money. I wonder where it all went in just a few short weeks.
Under Republican rule, the economy was booming. There were so many jobs available, millions of Americans had to work two or three of them at a time, just to keep up with the demand. In fact, well-paying jobs were so plentiful, we had to outsource tens of thousands of them on a regular basis, because the American workforce couldn’t cover them all.
But now the Republicans are telling us that raising the minimum wage is disastrous, and will put employers who make billions in profits every year out of business. Well, it didn’t take long for the Democrats to wreck everything, did it?
And who could keep the nation safer than the Grand Ol’ Party? In fact, they made the country so safe, it’s ridiculous to implement things like mandatory cargo inspections at this stage of the game. What are those crazy lefties thinking? Like, 9-11 is so yesterday – the Republicans never even mention it. Are the Democrats just trying to strike fear into average citizens, in an attempt to manipulate them? Sure sounds like it to me.
As for the spirit of bipartisanship that existed when the GOP was in the majority, it looks like that flew out the window on day one of Democratic rule, doesn’t it? You would think the Democrats would remember what it was like to be in the minority, and would treat their colleagues across the aisle accordingly. I guess what they say about “total power corrupting totally” is true after all.
Speaking of corruption, why are the Democrats so intent on investigations into wrongdoing? Apparently there was no need for these kinds of inquiries during the Republicans’ rule. Didn’t Cunningham and Foley openly admit to their malfeasance the minute they got caught? Call me crazy, but it seems to me these investigations are just a waste of time, and will keep our lawmakers from dealing with the grave and gathering threat posed by flag-burners.
In fact, these San Francisco-values types don’t seem to understand priorities at all. For over a year now, they’ve been asking questions about why Katrina victims are still struggling, and why NOLA hasn’t been reconstructed to their satisfaction.
Apparently they are unable to grasp the fundamental truth that if we don’t spend taxpayer dollars where they really count, like escalating the War in Iraq, New Orleans will wind up being just another enclave for terrorists bent on destroying our way of life. Maybe they won’t think rebuilding NOLA was such a great idea when Osama Bin Laden moves into a condo in the Latin Quarter, feasting on Rice-a-Roni while he plots against us. Food for thought.
I already miss the neo-con visionaries – Paul “This War Will Pay For Itself” Wolfowitz, Richard “A Year From Now There Will be a Square in Baghdad named after Bush” Perle, Ken "Cakewalk" Adilman – men of prescience who could pinpoint the very second that the insurgency would be in its last throes.
One can’t help but notice that since the Democrats have taken charge, the War in Iraq, undeniably successful right up until November 7, 2006, has now collapsed into chaos, a quagmire that, according to the then-in charge Republicans, was one corner-turn away from complete victory. How it all went so terribly wrong in a matter of weeks is anybody’s guess.
Even poor President Bush, the Great Decider, seemed to run out of his legendary decidery abilities after the mid-term elections put those whacky Liberals in charge. That constant harping on his incompetence was bound to take its toll, and even Poppy Bush and Uncle Jim Baker couldn’t bring that can-do smile back to the BushBaby’s face. How sad is that?
If only we could go back to the good old days, when men were men and had no problem sending other mothers’ children into battle without being questioned about nit-picky things like exactly what it is we’re in Iraq to accomplish.
If only we could turn back the hands of time, and return to the halcyon days when the victory inherent in repainting a Baghdad schoolhouse overshadowed things like death and destruction, a time when blue fingers were the true measure of success in a country that no longer has to trouble itself with trivial pursuits like electricity and clean drinking water.
If only we could return the governance of our nation to the GOP, and go back to the Camelot-like days of unfettered executive power, the rubber-stamping of the insane whims of an Idiot, the photo-op, smoke-and-mirrors illusion that we were still a nation worthy of global respect.
If only we could once again live, as a nation, within the castle-in-the-air built by a delusional leader, guarded by his noble cheerleading knights.
If only we could continue to walk that righteous path of torture, all the while being told about the good Christian values we were adhering to while wreaking war, famine, pestilence and death on anyone and everyone who disagreed with such a credo.
If only we could go back to being a nation of patriots who never questioned the fact that we had abandoned the Constitution and the foundation of democracy, who allowed the laws of our land to be broken without raising our voices in dissent.
If only I could get my tongue unstuck from the inside of my cheek.
