Gulf of Tonkin Incident

The Gulf of Tonkin Incident was an alleged pair of attacks (the second of which may have been a false alarm) by naval forces of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam against two American destroyers, the USS Maddox and the USS Turner Joy. The attacks occurred on 2 and 4 August 1964 in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Later research, including a report released in 2005 by the National Security Agency, indicated that the second attack did not occur, but also attempted to dispel the long-standing assumption that members of the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson had knowingly lied about the nature of the incident

1. That is exactly how it will happen.
The old 'false flag' routine. The Gulf airspace, with 3 CBGs, if cluttered with aircraft! I'm sure someone is giving 'orders' to put aircraft a little too close to Iran.

5. I got the point....I just wondered if it had actually occured..
..as I too expect it any time.

I was in that destroyer squadron, BTW. I arrived shortly after the Maddox "incident".

4. i think they'd need something more than a little 'incident'
to 'justify' any sort of major attack.

6. need something more than a little 'incident? - look what Israel did to lebanon over 2 soldiers
The Gulf Of Tonkin incident was Prez Johnson's BS. story that American ships were being attacked and fired on by the north Vietnamese

Prediction: Bush: today two american soldiers lost their life after being fired upon by the Iranian air forces. like Pearl Harbor, 9-11, "they have to attack us first. With Iraq in such a sad state, Iran would provide excellant cover opportunities.

7. Iran has several subs and may go ahead and sink a ship. You
have a group in Iran that have stated and hope for great destruction, so that they can return to an 800AD environment. Problems is * is ready to help. The old "let's get it on" mantra by both sides could let it happen any day now.

As seen by today's problems with a sub hitting a Japanese tanker. Modern warships in a small sea can have unseen problems.

8. Not going to happen...
Iran has diesel subs I believe which our modern sonar would here from a mile away, US Navy ships have 24/7 watches so they would have to get very very lucky. The Persian Gulf ain't that small...

There will be not be an US/Iran or Israel/Iran War. Sorry folks this just ain't gonna happen, how about focusing on Iraq?

;-)
