When in doubt, blame the victim
Finally, our government is asking the key questionwhen the Iraqis started this war, what they hell were they thinking?
  • Reid said... "It's time for the Iraqis to do their part."
  • Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., an Air Force veteran and member of the House Intelligence Committee, said she would not support increasing troop levels "to do for the Iraqis what the Iraqis will not do for themselves."
  • Sen. Ben Nelson, who was among the small group of senators who met with the president Friday, said he believed Bush was aware of the high stakes and knew he would have to sell any plan to the American public. Bush suggested to the senators there would be "the expectation of the Iraqis carrying out their part of the deal, or else," said Nelson, D-Neb.

1.  We illegally invade their country. Bomb the shit out
them. Destroy their infrastructure. Kill many thousands of their citizens. Then these politicians have the audacity to bitch and moan that the Iraqi people aren't "doing their part" because they're fighting like hell to get rid of us?

What universe are they living in?

2. I want our kids out of there pronto...
...but it's just sick to act like the big problem is slacky Iraqis.

They must think it's more palatable to say than "the US totally fucked up beyond our ability to fix it, so we're going home."

3. To continue the occupation,
they must blame the victims. Our government is no different from any other imperial aggressor in history.

4. In this case...
...blaming the victims is actually the exit strategy, a super-perverse kind of sour grapes -- "those Iraqis weren't worth saving anyway."

Of course, the only reason they play this game is that they are too chickenshit to admit that, as you say, this was an imperialistic misadventure.

6. Yes, it's a very weak position for anti-war Congresspeople to take
It's the most weaselly alternative to admitting this is a five-alarm fiasco, and an unequivocal stain on America's reputation.

I'm glad that the people using the point are arguing for us getting out, but dishonesty got us into this mess, and it is just as likely to help prolong it.
