Former Virginia Gov. Gilmore (R) to File for President on Monday
http://www.raisingkaine.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=6527

From RK Breaking:

A highly reliable source of mine who attended last night's Bob FitzSimmonds (R-29th) for State Senate announcement/fundraiser, held at the Holiday Inn near the battlefield in Manassas, informs me that former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore "let it slip that he would file for President on Monday." My source notes that Gilmore made his announcement "after spending most of his speech bashing moderate and 'RINO' Republicans." Nice. Also according to my source, there were around 80 people there last night who each paid $50 to attend the event. Presumably, most of these Republicans were not RINO's (e.g., Ken Cuccinelli, Scott Lingamfelter, the current and immediate past presidents of the Manassas city and Prince William County GOPs). Ha.
P.S. Ben Tribbett has part one of a three-part series on the Fitzsimmonds announcement, as well as a conversation he had with Gilmore. Check it out.

4. Build him up.
Gilmore is like Tancredo and Brownback. The more they talk, the better we look.

9. its funny I used to live in VA - and remember a number of former govs...
but this name - completely escapes me. I remember Robb, I remember Bailisle (sp), I remember Wilder, I remember Allen, and ... WHO? Completely forgetable.

It would be like John Engler getting in the race - except Engler did serve 3 (disasterous) terms in Michigan.

11. Gilmore won repealing the car tax ?
Then Virginia sunk into the abyss of crappy roads ? If I remember my Virginia history correctly...we're still not recovered.

12. You dead on about that
used to live in VA and the car tax was not completly abolished, the last phase was to come through after Gov. Mark Warner was sworn in, but Warner rejected that.

Alot of DMV's were closed or open minimal hours for about 2 years because of the car tax enacted by Gilmore.

VA's roads and transportation infrastructure has suffered greatly because of Gilmore's car tax repeal.

5. He is the WORST!!
I live in Virginia and when he was governor, he was a religious prig, just like Virgil. When he found out a woman was going to disconnect life support to her brain-dead husband, Gilmore did the same thing Jeb did and prevented it from happening, using his powers as governor. He made this woman drag through the court system until she finally won the "right" to end her husbands terrible existence. I think it took about a year, with Gilmore's stooges fighting her all the way. When she tried to sue him, the case was dismissed. I hope every moment of that horrible time comes out if he tries to run.

16. My mom told me about this last week...I have no idea how she had
heard it was a possibility...and then she just laughed and laughed. My whole family is in Virginia and even the Repukes in the family wouldn't vote for this guy. Proves that Repukes evidently are truly delusional if Gilmore thinks he has a snowball's chance.

19. Why do they run if they know they'll lose?
I've always wondered about candidates like this. For example, why did Alan Keyes run? What are the advantages of waging an expensive, tiring campaign for president if your chances are so slim?

21. I wonder if he's trying to spoil Mark Warner?
Warner has supposedly ruled out a Presidential run, but you never know. Warner has plenty of time to re-enter the race--and it might not be such a bad idea anyway, since it would solidify his donor base in case he wants to run for Governor again in 2009 (Virginia Governors must be out of office for four years before they become eligible to run again).

Gilmore doesn't even have a helluva lot of clout with Virginians anymore, seeing as he got elected on a one-issue platform, repeal of the car tax, then double-crossed everyone and left it in place.

22. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Few, if any Virginians will vote for him.

He failed to bring about his promised tax cuts after years of bitter battling with the Republican legislature, then skipped out on his duties early to secure his next job working for the party. The governorship has been Democratic ever since.
