Fallen Down the Rabbit Hole
A. Alexander, December 31st, 2006

I've fallen down the rabbit hole, haven't I? It's just me 'n Alice, The Hatter (Mad Hatter, if you must) and a crazed wannabe King George W. Bush who, like Alice's Queen; gets to decide who lives and who dies...beheadings are optional.

It really isn't possible for American political life to become anymore mad. Somewhere in the back of my memory - seems like ages ago now, I distinctly remember the country holding an election. The results were pretty clear -- at least it seemed so at the time -- the American people wanted THEIR military out of Iraq. But that didn't happen. Indeed, it isn't going to happen. Instead, four years wayyyy too late, the President...err...the 'Decider' is finally working on a PLAN to fight his long lost war.

Four years after a war's beginnings and George W. Bush is only now putting together the 'strategy for victory' - I've got to be down the rabbit hole!

snip//

Let me tell you, it's crazy down here. Down here - down here in the world of madness, they're having a five day national memorial for Gerald Ford. Don't get me wrong, I'm not kicking a guy when he's settling into rigormortis, but five days? That's nearly twice as long as he stood as an appointed president. Honestly! A five day memorial for a person who was, after Agnew copped to bribery, SELECTED as Nixon's vice-president and then only became president because Nixon bailed. Then, before the president-by-default could consistently, without help, find the toilet in the White House, Carter defeated him.

snip//

It's okay - you can tell me. I've fallen down the rabbit hole, haven't I? I must have, because if I hadn't fallen down the rabbit hole the Ford shindig would be a three-hour event, 21 gun salute, and a half-off coupon for a Watergate stamp at Dead President's R-Us. Ah...but down in the rabbit hole, it isn't about Gerry Ford at all, is it? It is about King George and Karl Rove needing to divert the media's attention away from the fact that, four years on, we still don't have a plan to fight the war in Iraq.

2. The American People no longer control our nation's foreign policy
Shortly after the turn of the last century, a group of people established an ostensibly American branch of the Royal Institute of International Affairs. They called this offshoot, the Council on Foreign Relations. Since that time, that group has become more and more powerful. In fact, it is now so powerful that the overwhelming majority of high level appointees of both parties for the last several decades have been members of the CFR. In addition, a very large number of the most visable and influential members of the Media are also members of this same organization.

This group is almost never mentioned in the news, and the few times that it is mentioned, it is referred to in the most glowing of terms, and the level of control of the organization is NEVER mentioned.

If all we do is get rid of one bunch of insiders and replace them with another bunch of insiders from the same organization nothing will ever change.

This is the reason that despite Clinton promising the Union members that he would fight NAFTA tooth and nail, when push came to shove, Clinton, the media and the entire Eastern Establishment pushed it through despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of Americans had serious reservations.

4. Bush scrapes bottom for Ford parallels.
Obviously, it was the intervening holidays that stretched the Ford ceremonies to such a length. (They couldn't hold the ceremonies on Friday, cuz it was the last business day of the year and thus an especially vital day for Wall Street as investors bought or sold for tax reasons. Tuesday was "second worse," so they held things over till then.)

But what was truly frightening was the way Bush tried, repeatedly, to paint Ford's career in terms reminiscent of Bush's own:

How Ford was deprecated as a lightweight during his tenure but was later adjudged to have been "the right man at the right time"...how Ford followed his own principles without deferring to polls (such as in pardoning Nixon)...how Ford's pardon for Nixon was vital in order to "heal the nation" after we'd been rocked by Tricky Dick's high crimes and misdemeanors...how Ford made the tough decisions, even if they were unpopular...and how Ford's reputation has been rehabilitated as historians recognize that he wasn't so bad after all.

Bush is plainly trying to imply that his own reputation will be rehabbed, once we wise up to his genius.

He may also be laying the groundwork for begging our pardon, in case it comes to that. (Hey, a pardon instead of an impeachment would "heal the nation"!)
