Trippi Says His Work for Dean Cost Him Money - LAT

http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-trippi10feb10,1,3971379.story?coll=la-headlines-politics

(snip)

Joe Trippi, former campaign manager for presidential candidate Howard Dean, gave a spirited defense of his work for the foundering candidate Monday, saying that he lost money by devoting himself to Dean and that he planned to organize a broader political movement.

(snip)

Most of the money paid to Trippi, McMahon and Squier, a Virginia-based media and consulting firm, was used to buy airtime for Dean.

(snip)

After being questioned by a reporter on the matter Friday, Trippi said he contacted his colleagues and learned that they had charged the Dean campaign a 7% commission — which the firm said is less than half the typical 15% commission.

Trippi said his one-third share amounted to $165,000.

The campaign has also reported to federal regulators that it paid Trippi's firm $312,000 for political consulting, according to tabulations by PoliticalMoneyLine, which tracks campaign spending.

1. That's practically nothing for the work that was done.
I'd like to see some apologies from a whole bunch of DUers, now.

7. Actually, I expect we'll soon be seeing posts about how Dean
ripped poor Trippi off.

5. $165K is a normal campaign manger salary.
Edited on Tue Feb-10-04 09:59 AM by displacedtexan
Plus, Trippi got part of that $312K, didn't he?
Plus the TV appearance fees and the probable (my speculation) book deal?

How much do you think Trippi should have made?

10. the point is that
Trippi has been accused in several threads of taking Dean's supporters for a ride. He didn't. The 'lost money' claim would be in comparision to his usual work I would imagine.

19. I'm a Dean supporter and I'm not apologizing.
You're basing it all on Trippi's word now. Come on.. he had to "call and find out" what they charged Dean? I've worked in television advertising, and in ad agencies. I'm sorry, I don't believe him. If he says the 7.2 million was for ad purchases, which is a low number for what's been reported already. The t.v. station charges the ad agency 15% less than standard printed rates. It's an agency discount. His claim that they only charged Dean 7% doesn't make sense. ANy ads placed by an agency gets a standard 15% discount from the t.v. station. So.. he rebated 8% back to Dean? Or did he take the amount for the ads and tell Dean to pay 8% less?

17. Ya know... you're entitled to your OPINION as much as anyone else
but I honestly don't understand the desire to irritate people the way you do with these posts.
I know I know... there are Dean supporters who do it too...but that doesn't excuse it.

16. Thats just the cash he got
Edited on Tue Feb-10-04 12:59 PM by Nicholas_J
There is not way of telling what interests Trippi's corporation had in the advertising businesses they did there work for. Once the money is in the firm's control there is not way of telling how the money was spent, and how much is waiting aside for bonuses after the election is over and no one is paying attention anymore.

Again. what Trippi claims and what actually occurred may be two differnt things. If it was such a good deal, why is Trippi gone?

18. Trippi had to call and "ask" what he charged Dean?
That's ridiculous. Any other business person out there have no clue what they are charging their biggest client?? He's insulting my intelligence. I'm a Dean supporter, but was happy to see Trippi go. WHen a campaign manager is signing autographs, you know there's trouble brewing. I don't believe his claims.

20. Ridiculous to Not Know?
I wouldn't expect Trippi to keep a running total of ad commissions. In the midst of the IA-NH crunch, that would be the last thing on his mind.

23. Where's the Story?
More power to Joe Trippi for making whatever he can make. I haven't heard/read anything that quotes Dean as saying Trippi ripped him off or acted improperly so where's the story?
