This week is our first quarter 2004 fund drive. Our goal is to bring in 1000 individual donations before Sunday, February 15. To show our appreciation, we're unveiling cool new website upgrades every 200 donations received. (The upgrades get better the higher you go, and the upgrade at 1000 is something that people have been begging for since we moved into the new message board.)

There is no other place like this anywhere on the Internet. Where else can you interact with such a diverse and interesting group of people? Where else can you read so many things -- interesting or irritating, thoughtful or silly, satisfying or enraging -- all in the space of five minutes? To the best of my knowledge, there is no other place on the Internet specifically for progressives that has such a wide variety of opinion as we have here. But despite our differences, we are all united by our alarm at the the illegitimate, unelected moron in the White House.

I know that Democratic Underground is not perfect and I have certainly made a few missteps in my stewardship of this place, but I believe there is still no question that DU is the best message board on the Internet. The fact that you are here reading this post should be proof enough of that. Regardless of what you think of me or the moderators or the candidate infighting -- If you spend lots of time here then the value of DU should be self-evident, and you should contribute to help keep us online.

Actually, my donation was for more $$ that 2 cents, but here's why:

I tremendously appreciate the "tough love" efforts at keeping this forum semi-civilized. While some bemoan the "loss" of free speech, I think the rules (and their strict enforcement) actually allow for rational and intelligent discourse. Is it really "free" speech when everyone is screaming and shouting? Drowning out anything thoughtful or original? I don't think so, and have voted that way at every opportunity. So...

The extra contri I made today was a tangible thank you to Skinner for his efforts at making DU a must-visit site!

(PLEASE: no flames or arguments re free speech vs hard rules. I KNOW not everyone agrees, I KNOW your reasons... This was a positive note to Skinner explaining why I made another contri; nothing more.)
