Dec. 16, 2006 — President Bush is likely to support a "surge" of additional U.S. troops to Iraq, officials familiar with planning believe.

The surge could include more than 30,000 additional troops and last as long as two years, sources tell ABC News.

But the top generals in the region warn that such a dramatic escalation would not only risk more American lives, it might discourage Iraqis from taking charge of their own security.

Late this week, the Army chief of staff told Congress his soldiers already are stretched too thin.

Also, it is being said, off the record that Bush is still talking to Rumsfeld re Iraq plans. Yeah, the good ol' GOP, they tell you they're going to do something and go ahead and do the opposite behind the scenes. ARE THEY ALL SOCIOPATHS WITH NO SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY? I think you can count on them to say anything to divert attention while they go ahead and do what they want in service of their obsessions.

1. This will kill both American troops and Republican political careers.
Is Bush bucking for impeachment? If he isn't, I can't imagine a stupider move.

2. Nonsense. Reid said today he would "go along with" this madness
Unfortunately, our next chance to get rid of Reid is 2010.

6. Regardless, the American people don't have the will for this war.

A Congresswoman who participated in Nixon's impeachment recently pointed out that it was not the will of Congress that moved that forward. It was the will of the people.

11. No he didn't
He said the same thing Biden said, he would support additional troops if it were for a short time AND part of a withdrawal plan. A news article mis-quoted him and, in typical fashion, DUers choose to believe the lying media rather than take two seconds to find out what was actually said.

Then they blame the Party for letting lies get out of hand, when THEY'RE the ones spreading the lies.

3. "Last as long as two years"
and then someone else will have lost Dubya's war. Can't be his fault as he's no longer there.

7. What a tragic joke this country has become.
Send more troops. Make more bombs. Pay more defense contractors.
While the sheep nod their heads and pray/shop.

9. IOW: throw in everything we have left, for as long as he has left
wouldn't this spell DESPERATION to our adversaries in the region? Wouldn't they be enticed by the thought that a final defeat of US hegemony in the M.E. was theirs to win, and just around the corner, if we did what he plans to do?
