Time mag, Brian Williams, and you
The collective groan on the Intertubes this morning is a response to Time magazine's decision to name you (yeah, you!) Person of the Year, a choice that's simultaneously corny, meta, and fairly reasonable.

NBC anchor Brian Williams inadvertently shows the necessity of netroots, as he bemoans the move to participatory media:

The problem is that there's a lot of information out there that citizens in an informed democracy need to know in our complicated world with U.S. troops on the ground along two major fronts.

Jesus Fucking Christ! The reason we're in one of those fronts was the MSM's 2003 Cheerleader of the Year performance. If there were a little more blog reading and a little less embedded flag-waving on the ol' Philco, Brian would have a little less news to report. And no news, they say, is good news.

3. and the REAL problem is, Brian, that
the msm doesn't deliver it.

What the msm DOES deliver is the info TPTB WANT us to "know" so we are "properly" informed in ways that won't upset the applecart.

Poor Brian, and you try SO hard, too.

BTW, the first TV I ever had was a Philco. Little black and white. It lasted forever -- decades, with never a service call. I finally sold it in a garage sale and I'll bet that thing is STILL working.

5. We had a Zenith and a little tabletop Admiral
They tuned in guys like Walter Cronkite and Huntley & Brinkley, who used to tell us the truth -- even when it wasn't pretty or fun or exactly what the President said.

I wish I still had one of those sets...

I remember them well too, despite the fact I was quite young at the time.

Now there's a Twilight Zone Redux plot for ya: buy an old, old TV set and get the old, old anchors like Brinkley and Cronkite telling you the TRUTH of what's going on today.

7. And maybe O'Reilly and Hannity would be sent back in time
To "Swiftboat" JFK and blow up the Cuban Missile Crisis by harping on his bedroom exploits.

4. This was the year the Internet pulled back the curtain of the Oz corporate media
DUers had seen it for years. However, this was the year that Mr. and Mrs. Mainstream finally realized they'd been sold a load of crap in the form of propaganda.
