7. :-)
I should probably dump this one and change to a more positive one.

I hate flogging a dead horse -- they have imploded so badly that I feel bad for the country.

However, lately I am feeling completely buoyed by the prospects of Gore's resurgence...

9. As unfortunate as it is, the guy who probably best qualifies for that title
is the President of Iran. In terms of sheer impact and significance, good or bad, he has made Iran into a regional superpower and drastically altered the balance of power in that key region of the world.

23. I had the same thought when I looked at the list
But I'd still hate for him to get it. I also thought Pelosi was a worthy name, but her impact didn't affect the entire year -- it will be felt more next year.

49. I don't think that is necessarily the reasoning...
I thought GWB myself because this year he proved to the entire world including his own party that he is now the worst president in history. And that is quite an achievement for a guy who never came in #1 at anything before.

But I still voted for Gore for his effort to bring America's focus back to planet earth.

I think it's ironic, especially if Al wins, that it will be announced right in the middle of all the MoveOn "Inconvenient Truth" parties going on around the country tonight.

35. I voted for Gore, but I bet the YouTube guys win.
They had a major influence on the election with the video of the Macaca moment, and all the other hideous atrocities that the GOP has tried to keep out of public view. People who normally won't watch television because of commercials, turn to YouTube to see what's going on. Even DU posts political vids from YT.

YouTube is a phenomenon.

JMO. YMMV.

38. IMO Ahmadi-Najad is the only suitable answer
After today's election handed him what looks like a fairly stinging rebuke he may not be able to do as much in 2007, but his performance in 2006 in taking Iran from an isolated minor state surrounded on both sides by the world's greatest superpower to a heavyweight regional power is nothing short of phenomenal, and probably influenced the world more for good or ill than did anyone else on the list.

64. The thing is, I believe Al Gore could have been given credit on both
They also seemed to downplay Tim Berner Lee's contribution to the internet as well, could be because he came to the defense of Al Gore's major political contribution to the creation of the internet, while the mass corporate media were busy slandering him over having claimed to have invented it.

I imagine it's hard to give credit to someone, particularly on a subject for which you've been busy trashing said person for years.

59. Sadly by the definition of person of the year, I don't think Gore qualifies
Gore may yet have a bigger impact on the future, but many had a larger impact on the present.

Dean had a larger impact on the current year (50 state strategy and all). Bush had a larger impact on everything in America. Iran's president had a larger impact than Gore as well.

The person of the year is awarded for impact, for better or for worse.
