Southern States Are Set to Shake Democratic Race - NYT
By ADAM NAGOURNEY
Published: February 10, 2004

NASHVILLE, Feb. 9 — Gen. Wesley K. Clark and Senator John Edwards campaigned furiously through Virginia and Tennessee on Monday, struggling to block Senator John Kerry from winning two pivotal primaries on Tuesday that Democrats said would put intense pressure on them to quit the race.

(snip)

The chairman of the Tennessee Democratic Party, Randall A. Button, said Monday that General Clark, who is from neighboring Arkansas, and Mr. Edwards, who is from neighboring North Carolina, should quit if they could not beat Mr. Kerry on their home turf, an outcome some polls released Monday suggested.

"They are both Southerners that have a message that resonates with Southerners," Mr. Button said. If they lose, he said, "it's gotten down to this: Let's move ahead to our objective, and our objective is unseating George W. Bush."

A senior national Democratic Party official made the same argument, saying that General Clark and Mr. Edwards would have difficulty raising money to push on should they lose to Mr. Kerry in the South. "The voters will have spoken: Let's get on with it," this official said.

Jesus Christ on a pogo stick.

Senior national Democratic Party official to southern Democrats: "Fuck off."

Senior national Democratic Party official to California and New York Democrats: "Fuck off also."

Somebody wake me up around the end of October. I can't stand to watch this anymore.

3. Well here's a thought:
If Clark and Edwards between them take Virginia and Tennessee, will that be an indication that the party, perhaps the country itself, is still hopelessly split along geographical lines?

9. I've donated a fair chunk of change, and a lot of my
time, which is reasonably valuable, to Clark, who is, I believe, potentially the best thing to happen to Democrats since the Depression. But I agree with this assessment. This primary format sucks ass, but it is what it is, and there isn't a whole lot we can do about it. We have two excellent people banging heads against each other in the South, and Kerry is beating both of them. It is rapidly becoming time to start working to overcome Kerry's inherent weaknesses as a candidate and try to get him elected.

Notice, this is different from when the Dean camp was trying to say this: votes have actually been cast, and besides, Dean is Dean. But I want Bush gone, and there is hardly a faint chance any longer that Kerry will be stopped.

12. I'm almost at the end of my rope!
If these fuckers keep trying to push me around... they're on their own in Nov!

My voice/vote doesn't matter now? Fine, then it won't be there in November either!

I'm so sick of this crap!
