-- the highest rate ever, according to Newsweek -- while just 21 percent thought
the United States was making progress in Iraq.

Washington should threaten to reduce economic and military support for Baghdad's
government if it fails to meet key goals. Fifty-seven percent agreed that the
United States should engage Iran and Syria in efforts to stabilize Iraq, and
61 percent supported the idea of a renewed US commitment to pressing for Israeli-
Palestinian peace.
US President George W. Bush's approval rating, meanwhile, held fairly steady at 32
percent, compared with 31 percent in the November 9-10 Newsweek poll.
