From the NYT Blog: Deans 50 State Lovefest

Howard Dean resisted the opportunity to gloat.

Mr. Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, addressed the party’s executive committee today in Washington. During a late-morning speech to the group, he did not dwell on the argument that his 50-state strategy helped Democrats win control of the House, Senate and a majority of governor’s offices and state legislatures across the country.

He let others do that for him.

At the conclusion of the two-hour meeting today at the Omni Shoreham hotel in Washington’s Woodley Park neighborhood, Mr. Dean was delayed gaveling the session to a close because so many Democrats on the committee wanted to praise the strategy – still controversial in many circles – that he is employing to rebuild the party across America.

This was the nicest part for me as he was leaving the building Dean was asked if he felt vindicated.

“The best thing to do, instead of speaking about things like vindication is just say: Look, we won. Everybody had a huge contribution to make – including some of the participants in all the feuding that was going on,” Mr. Dean said. “We ought to take comfort in the fact that we all worked hard, we all get some credit for it and we need to move ahead.”

A pretty nice article all told.

Edited to correct something

3. "That’s not high on my agenda"...Mr. Dean said...
"Will his strategy be embraced now by Democratic leaders in Washington?
“That’s not high on my agenda,” Mr. Dean said before waving goodbye."

:applause:

Nor is it high on mine either.

4. If they want to get re-elected
Dem leaders in Washington had better embrace it. If not, we'll have to find replacements for them.

5. That short blog post told more about the meeting...
than all the long articles did. I notice one of the main papers, NYT or WP, did not even tell where the meeting was or what it was about.

7. Yes it was better than the main article
It gave not just what was said but also conveyed the atmosphere.

I wasn't a huge Dean supporter in 2004 and as a resident of New Jersey (June Primary)had no say in the matter anyway. Since then I've been increasingly impressed starting with his ability to swallow a bitter defeat and put his effort into helping the party that rejected him.

I've never met Dean but the guy seems to have a hide of leather. He focuses on a goal and doesn't let himself be distracted.

I was expecting a high profile politician to be a showboat as DNC chair but if anything, Dean's not out in front of the media enough. He certainly has not "gone native" in DC. He's even stayed pretty much out of the post victory bickering when another politican would not have been able to resist personally smacking down the likes James Carville.

This little meeting sounds like a brilliant response to his critics done in a way that would be very hard to answer.

10. I'd say it says it all!
Seems the rest of the world sees what we saw in Dean long ago. Hopefully the Dem party big wigs will pull their heads out of their asses and see it too. Someday.
