While perhaps not technically true, it is certainly safe to say, with only a bit of hyperbole, that there's not one damned thing right with our country or our society right now.

Be it foreign policy, domestic social policy, fiscal policy, pick-a-policy, nothing is working as it should.

Some pretty serious tax code tinkering is necessary just to keep us from being overcome by runaway inflation.

Some pretty serious social policy tinkering is in order just to protect from *really** dire straits the least of our society.

Some pretty serious reapportioning of the national budget is needed to enable us to avoid becoming a nation of invalids with no health care. That big Baby Boom bunch is headed for the nursing homes ... assuming they don't first die from an infected cut gotten while opening a can of cat food for supper.

Some deadly serious foreign policy adjustments need to be made. We may even find it in our national interest to think about paying war reparations.

If the 08 president is a Democrat, and I think it will be, you just KNOW we're gunna get the aftermath of the Necon Wargasm hung around our necks like an 800 lb albatross.

Over our country's history, presidents who are members of the Republic Party fuck things up and presidents who are members of the Democratic Party fix them. But even in getting it fixed, only one Democratic president was hailed for that success - FDR. And even he had those who were, contemporaneously, hellbent to end his programs.

We need to think about this. In 08, it could be the case that:

The good news is ... we won.
The bad news is ..... we won.

WHEN (not if) we win in 08, we need to keep this phenomenon in clear focus. We can NOT allow the right to hang THEIR mess on us.

Toward that end, it seems to me a good use of our navel gazing time would be to stop the internecine wars that are already starting and work on some BIG messaging that keeps the dirty deeds of the Republic Party and the Rubber Stamp Congress of the first half of the first decade of the new century squarely where the hell it belongs ... on THEIR backs ..... not on ours.

We ARE the good guys, fer krissakes.

Go Tell It On the Mountain!

2. That goes without saying ...... but look at recent history .....
Reagan and Poppy had 12 years to fuck things up. Clinton got 8 to fix them (sorta) and then along came Junior to REALLY fuck things up.

We need to fix shit and THEN establish a **series** of Democratic adminstrations that can not only overcome what they did to this country, but to truly move it to a new and better place.

The pattern of one Dem to sorta fix shit and then two or three Republics to loot it again has GOT to stop.

3. I think we have to be prepared for a major shift in world power
The dollar is going down the tubes, and the new economic powers will be in the East, most likely led by China. Topping this, I fear dramatic earth changes happening-not just climate change, but major earthquakes here in the continental US (San Andreas and New Madrid are due for a shake).

There's not much a Democratically led Congress or a Democratic President can do about the economy-Bush has basically sealed our fate on that--except to encourage innovation and do something about companies outsourcing these new ideas that we will need literally to survive. The one thing the Dems CAN and SHOULD do immediately is to put into place plans and comepetant people to deal with natural disasters. That may be enough to make Americans in general stop listening to MSM and come to their senses as to which party really cares about them.

5. The Augean Stables, pretty much.
The biggest pile of shit ever. The Dems will be blamed, of course, for whatever happens after January. But at least maybe they can avoid making things drastically worse, like by invading Iran. In any event, there's some really overwhelming shit-shoveling that will have to be done.

7. I think the next two years will change the playing field an awful lot.
More than anyone, of any political stripe, can predict.
