For Immediate Release
Washington, DC -
John Kerry today received the support of the 180,000-member Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), after winning presidential contests in Michigan, Washington State and Maine this weekend. The ATU, which previously backed Rep. Dick Gephardt, is the eighth national labor union to endorse John Kerry for President.
“John Kerry has been a champion for working families, fighting for affordable health care, the right to organize and the creation of good jobs and a vibrant economy,” said ATU President Warren S. George. “Kerry is committed to strengthening our urban centers by investing in schools, health care and public transportation and increasing access to affordable housing. Our members have benefited enormously from his courage and conviction to stand up for what is right.”
“In the weeks and months ahead, our members nationwide will work on behalf of John Kerry to ensure victory in November 2004,” said ATU President George.
The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) is the largest labor organization representing transit workers in the United States and Canada. Over 180,000 members in over 273 local unions in 46 states and nine provinces make up the ATU. The union represents bus, subway, light rail and ferry operators, clerks, baggage handlers, mechanics and others in the urban transit, over-the-road, and school bus industries, as well as emergency medical, clerical, and municipal workers.
