I think what we need to look for in a Presidential candidate is
- Governor, not Senator or Congressman/woman Governors have executive experience. Most importantly, it is harder to pick apart their voting record and paint them as a flip flopper as it is with legislative background
- Not from a Blue State Preferably from a red state, but at the very least, a purple state. The reason being, these are candidates who know how to win in areas we will need to win to claim the White House. This is what intrigues me about Brad Henry. He was elected to a second consecutive term in Oklahoma, which is supposedly rare there.
- Charima I know John Kerry would have made a great president, but he was a lousy candidate. I won't say he had no charisma, it just didn't show on television or in large crowds.
- Clean The Republicans will be digging for dirt like it's diamonds. Make that squeaky clean.
Of course we want some one strong on the issues, but I'd rather not ask them, "well, would you have voted for the Iraqi War or not?" It's a stupid question. They have the benefit of hindsight, they don't have the same information the Senators/Congresspeople did when the vote was on the floor. Unless you can find statements made in 2002 about Iraq, skip it. Ask them what they think our next steps should be and judge accordingly.
Don't ask how they feel about abortion, flag burning, etc - ask which Supreme Court justices they admire, or what rulings they like/dislike the most.
Ask what their priorities would be.
