Massachusetts Senator John Kerry's surge to the front in his party's presidential race has buoyed the hopes of local Democratic activists, who will be battling Republicans for positions lower down on the ballot in November.
"I definitely sense that people are very, very upbeat," said John E. Walsh, a Democratic activist from Abington and former chairman of the Plymouth County Democratic League. "It is undeniable that if Senator Kerry is the nominee in November, he will have coattails."
P.J. O'Sullivan, a Democratic political consultant whose office is in Quincy, said, "The fact that we can presume this will be ground zero for the presidential campaign will play well for Democratic candidates here."
Republican Governor Mitt Romney has vowed to challenge the Democratic dominance in the state Legislature this year. He and the state GOP have been recruiting candidates and raising money for local campaigns.
