more than anything else. Firing von Rumsfeldt would be a show of cowardice in the face of mere "moderates" and their opinion that high-handed Rummy screwed up what was supposed to be a beautiful war. If Bush had fired his SecDef the base may have crumbled further costing them more votes than could be picked up among the moderates and independents.
It would have been viewed as acknowledgement of error and a few fence sitters would have come down on the Republithug side instead of stayed home or voted for the Democrats. Good thing Bush is so dumb!
