West Point Grads Silent Protest Against Bush Visit

West Point Grads Silent Protest Against Bush Visit

Greeley, CO. 10:00am
Shannon and Joe Sharrock, both USMA grads in the Class of 1997, are calling on members of Service Academy Graduates Against the War and supporters in the Greeley, Colorado, area to protest when President Bush comes to town. Bush will be speaking at the Island Grove Regional Park in Greeley at 10am on November 4. This is a great opportunity to get the word out that the United States service academies are not at all pleased.

2. How beautiful and so very very warranted
if there was no applause after they announce the President...if there was, instead, nothing....nothing at all but silence... just the deafening sound of silence instead of the wild cheers he is no doubt expecting. How embarrassing for him.... I wonder how he would respond? Imagine a presidential meltdown in front of the cadets at West Point!

3. He'd go nuts.
He lives and dies by the charade that he's "Commander-in-Chief". He may have the title, but that doesn't make him a leader.

5. Chomsky speaks at West Point about "Just War Theory"
Explaining that what has to pass for "just war theory" (which is one of them neocon ideas) is useless as a theory and as a guiding principal. In essence it says that war is justified if we say it is.

And the cadets listened, and there was some debate.

Youtube says: "This video has been removed due to terms of use violation."

But there are alternatives:

6. It's kind of remarkable

I don't agree with Chomsky, assuming you're not over-simplifying what he said, but it's kind of remarkable that in the current political climate, and considering how vindictive the Bushies are, that the West Point commandant would invite Chomsky to speak (in normal times, I'd think nothing of it).

Wes Clark was invited to address an OCS graduation at Ft Benning last month.

I wonder if these aren't cases of senior military officers on active duty giving Rumsfeld (and by extention Bush) a signal of what they really think.

7. yes it is quite remarkable
One of the most outspoken critics of US foreign policy speaking in the den of one of the most prominent instruments for implementation of that foreign policy.

Re. just war theory: perhaps an argument can be made that such a thing as just war does exsist - but Just War Theory as presented in the literature is vague and ambiguous, so it is useless in determining whether or not any particular war is justified.

8. Ok, I might agree with that
I have to admit, I don't know that much about the "theory" in any current literature. I balked when you attributed "just war" to the neo-cons, since I am under the impression that the concept goes back to what St Augustine wrote. But I can see how the concept could be fairly easily manipulated to justify just about anything. Otoh, I would imagine the theory could be used to show why a war is not just, even if it is.

I do believe there is such a thing as just war, even as I hope someday the world will advance to a point where there isn't. I also believe we evolve socially as well as physically.
