LIBERAL: Say it loud and say it proud.
Edited on Wed Nov-01-06 04:54 PM by AtomicKitten

"Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote.
Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty.
Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act.
Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act.

What did Conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things every one.
So when you try to hurl that label at my feet, 'Liberal,' as if it were something to be ashamed of,
something dirty, something to run away from, it won't work, Senator, because I will pick up
that label and I will wear it as a badge of honor."

-- Matt Santos, fictional Democrat on West Wing

2. Another proud, loud liberal here!
When my mother says the word liberal it's like it was a four letter word. I reminded her I am liberal & proud of it. "OMG, what kind of thing did I raise?" she asked. She meant it jokingly, but it still stung. I reminded her of the very things Santos mentioned & told her since she enjoys the benefits we dirty liberals worked so hard to obtain, maybe she could just keep her damned mouth shut.

Some days I wonder why I bother to try to reach her. Some days it seems like she may actually see the light, other days I wonder at how a human being could possibly have their head so far up their butt. :eyes:

5. I have a friend who bleeds Republican.
His youngest son graduated from the University of Minnesota and is a liberal and a comedian. His dad blames the university for turning his son into a liberal in 4 years although he had his son at home for 18 years. The power of liberalism!

It's hard to come away from a place that's dedicated to research and moving foward and not shed a few backwards ideas.

14. Karl Rove said it...
"As people do better, they start voting like Republicans - unless they have too much education and vote Democratic, which proves there can be too much of a good thing."

I'm sure liberal is in my DNA and the first time

I discovered it was not a revered word, I was shocked!

That's when I learned the world is not always a nice place.

4. JFK said it best................
President John F. Kennedy on being a liberal...

"I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose, in human liberty as the source of national action, in the human heart as the source of national compassion, and in the human mind as the source of our invention and our ideas. It is, I believe, the faith in our fellow citizens as individuals and as people that lies at the heart of the liberal faith. For liberalism is not so much a party creed or set of fixed platform promises as it is an attitude of mind and heart, a faith in man's ability through the experiences of his reason and judgment to increase for himself and his fellow men the amount of justice and freedom and brotherhood which all human life deserves.

I believe also in the United States of America, in the promise that it contains and has contained throughout our history of producing a society so abundant and creative and so free and responsible that it cannot only fulfill the aspirations of its citizens, but serve equally well as a beacon for all mankind. I do not believe in a superstate. I see no magic in tax dollars which are sent to Washington and then returned. I abhor the waste and incompetence of large-scale federal bureaucracies in this administration as well as in others. I do not favor state compulsion when voluntary individual effort can do the job and do it well. But I believe in a government which acts, which exercises its full powers and full responsibilities. Government is an art and a precious obligation; and when it has a job to do, I believe it should do it. And this requires not only great ends but that we propose concrete means of achieving them.

Our responsibility is not discharged by announcement of virtuous ends. Our responsibility is to achieve these objectives with social invention, with political skill, and executive vigor. I believe for these reasons that liberalism is our best and only hope in the world today. For the liberal society is a free society, and it is at the same time and for that reason a strong society. Its strength is drawn from the will of free people committed to great ends and peacefully striving to meet them. Only liberalism, in short, can repair our national power, restore our national purpose, and liberate our national energies.

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

President John Fitzgerald Kennedy

11. My brother calls me a liberal like it's an insult,
and I thank him for the compliment. I love telling him that I'm glad to be intelligent and compassionate enough to be a liberal. O8) I love the confused look he gets on his face when his insult doesn't get the rise out of me he thinks it should. :eyes: I swear, it's hard to believe we came from the same womb.

15. A keeper from the 9/5/03 Real Time with Bill Maher
Maher: OK. I'm just wondering, of all the people who have the credentials to say "liberal" is not a bad word, I'm wondering if I could get you to say that.

Clark: Well, I'll say it right now.

Maher: Good for you!

Clark: We live in a liberal democracy. That's what we created in this country. It's in our constitution! We should be very clear on this... this country was founded on the principles of the enlightenment. It was the idea that people could talk, have reasonable dialogue and discuss the issues. It wasn't founded on the idea that someone would get struck by a divine inspiration and know everything, right from wrong. People who founded this country had religion, they had strong beliefs, but they believed in reason, and dialogue, and civil discourse. We can't lose that in this country. We've got to get it back.

19. Don't forget...
We started the War on Poverty! We are FOR that war! Even though the W.O.P. is stilling going on everyday, we will spend whatever we have to to give every poor person in America (and someday the world!) every dollar he/she needs to get by, because that's who we are! We are the party of TRUE compassion and caring. We should take 50% of CEO's pay and give it to poor people all over the world!
