TB: What other experiences do you bring to the table?

GC: I'm the only guy in this race that has ever been in business (since retiring from the military in 2000). I'm an investment banker. I've sat on corporate boards of directors, public and private. I started a company. I was chairman of a company. I am a former professor of economics (at West Point) and I worked in the White House Office of Management and Budget. I know something about the economy. I can get jobs going again. I know how to help ordinary families make it with education, health care and jobs.

TB: So, does that make you a moderate?

GC: This is what I can do. I don't call it where I am on the (liberal vs. conservative) map, OK? What I call it is what this country needs right now.

TB: What about leadership?

GC: I've done the leadership at the top. I'm the only guy in this race that's ever negotiated a peace treaty. I'm the only guy in this race who's ever commanded the (military) forces of other countries in war. When you add all that together, I don't fit exactly on the axis of liberal vs. conservative. But what I am is a fighter. I'm a pretty tough kid. I grew up without a father. I came down from Chicago to Arkansas when I was 4 years old and I worked my way up.

TB: Polls tell us that the economy is the No. 1 issue with voters. How are you going to fix the economic problems we face?

GC: We don't have enough money in the federal treasury to do what we need to do to help the economy. We (a Clark administration) are going to go to the wealthiest Americans, those making over $200,000 per year, and ask them to sacrifice, like everybody else is, and to give back the Bush tax cuts. That will bring $1 trillion back to the government. We're going to use that so every American child can have health insurance. We're going to enable every American family of low and moderate income to get health insurance and (use the tax roll backs) to fix our prescription drug benefit for seniors. We're going to enable every child in America to go to pre-school. Those are the kinds of things we have to do so that we can move forward in this country.

Clark recently called a 22-year-old woman whose 24-year-old husband died in Iraq. She has a six-month-old baby. Clark was 25 when he was wounded in Vietnam and Wes Jr. was a newborn.

TB: You have the reputation of being a tough guy to work with, that you don't take input from others, that you make up your mind and stick with it no matter how bad it is. A recent major article in The New Yorker magazine addressed this with sometimes scathing quotes from many people you have worked with. What is your response to those allegations?

GC: I'm a person who has firm ideas, but I'm very resourceful. It was my leadership skill that helped hold the alliance together during the (Kosovo) war. The people quoted in the magazine were working against me in the Pentagon and they lost. In other words, the Pentagon did not want us in Kosovo. The White House and the state department did. NATO did. Our allies did. I had to work (as Supreme Allied Commander of NATO forces) for 19 governments, not just one. Everyone, including the United States, except the Pentagon, wanted to prevent ethnic cleansing and another war in the Balkans. I had to use diplomacy and tact and leadership to do my job.

TB: So, you aren't afraid to go up against such powerful forces in our government?

GC: I'm not afraid.

I sat here almost in tears this morning. My husband, the Wes Freak was trying to convince me why Kerry was not a bad thing. I finally broke down and said, "This is a world divided by the very thing that Kerry voted for. We are in an economic crisis, and we are alienated from the rest of the world. Why the HELL can't this party see that we don't need a politician with experience to take over this country? We need someone with economic know-how, and a record of peace negotiations to fix the wrongs that Kerry allowed. Saying I'm all for Clark, but building up Kerry in case his nod is inevitable is something I am NOT prepared to do. I will NOT be persuaded to jump the bandwagon and go all rah-rah on Kerry just because he looks like Lincoln and the media has annointed them. I will not water-down my passion for Clark in order to be a nice, supportive Democrat."

Maybe I'm reacting like a stubborn child, but I supported Wes because I believed he was the one who could do the job... NOT because he was the one to beat bush... I think any of them could... but what they do once they're in office is an entirely different matter. I have no faith in a candidate that put the majority of the votes HE BOTHERED TO TAKE THE TIME TO CAST in favor of Bush. I have no faith in a candidate that says he opposes gay marriage, that gets the majority of his donations from BIG MONEY. I have no faith in a candidate like Kerry, and even if he gets the nod, I never will. I pray I'm wrong, but I don't see Kerry's presidency bringing about any of the beliefs this democrat is in favor of.

This is perhaps the best interview of any type I've read in this campaign season. Boy I wish Clark had declared and hit his stride earlier. I hope a splash can still be made.
