Homeland Security Chief Says the Web is Dangerous:
From Blog: How to Save the World:

Homeland Security Chief Says the Web is Dangerous: According to Wired, Chertoff is telling the Bushies that the Web allows people to 'learn' to be dissatisfied with the American Way, and then learn how to be terrorists. A perfect example of the blinkered conservative worldview that it's better to shelter people from truths that are not pleasant. And frightening in a guy who has as much power and influence as Chertoff. Thanks to fouroboros for the link.

1. Chertoff has a right to be worried.....we are exposing their crimes.
All criminals have a problem with the truth seeing the light of day.

10. Thank you - and welcome to DU!
Still, Chertoff has a point re: bomb making and the ilk. I don't like the idea of a neighbor building up a bomb to blow a bunch of people up... and if it's true that the rest of the world doesn't like us, bringing in people from around the world to train them might allow them to train themselves on these unsavory things too.

:scared:

'The truth is in the middle.' - a wise maxim.

11. I think the danger from terrorists
is vastly over-rated. I think you are nuts to be shaking in your shoes about Al-Qaeda. How dangerous are they to you really? BUT I think you need to be VERY AFRAID of your own government. I am with those who believe they were the brains behind 9/11. I hope I live long enough to see the truth come out about 9/11. I am 68. What are the chances? The internet is certainly spreading the word about the official lies about 9/11. The mainstream won't go there. If only 16% of Americans believe the official lies it is mainly cuz of the internet. I can't believe they haven't shut it up but I'm sure that must be in the works. They need to control the information and the internet is their worst enemy.

7. Define 'American way':
Owning a home?
Having a family?
Conversely, not having children if they preferred.
Making a living wage for doing good work.
Opportunities to advance since it's more expedient to learn while one's doing.
Helping the community?
Offering a good product to keep one's standing and quality assured?
Supporting America and its infrastructure?

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I know it to be.

13. It's the fascist impulse to control information.
If you control information, then you control the people. As practiced in "free" societies around the world--like China and Iran.

14. The best thing is that access to information via places like the Web is........
kicking ass on many closed societies like that.
I would bet the ruling class mostly hate the explosion of information, but that is just too damn bad isn't it :-)

Or better yet, Chertoff is going to ban American Freedoms because they're a threat to National Security.

They always confuse the messenger with the message. And I'm sure King George didn't like Paul Revere, either.

Walking across the street is DANGEROUS.

No, idiot. The internet is where we discuss your unpleasant actions. Not the other way around.

And to be honest, internet or not the eventual outcome of fascism is that the people don't like it. You lose with or without the net.

Join the human race!

19. The "internets" was the neo-con's big mistake
They have planned this coup for decades, taking over the media, FCC, the three branches of government, etc (yes, the vast right-wing conspiracy). Their downfall was that they "misunderestimated" technology and the internet. They would be in total, complete control if not for the information we receive, and the connections we make, from the internet.

They are attempting to rectify their mistake...and America will be lost when that day happens.

26. The Christian Coalition wants Internet freedom.
MoveOn.org and the Christian Coalition have joined forces to fight for Internet freedom.
No, this is not from the Onion.

From MoveOn:

"We never thought we'd see the day, but it's come: we're working together with the Christian Coalition. You read that right — the Christian Coalition has joined everyone from Google to MoveOn to the Gun Owners of America in the fight for Internet freedom. The momentum is on our side.

Internet companies like AT&T have been trying to win this fight by telling Republicans in Congress this is just a left-wing issue. But MoveOn and the Christian Coalition have designed a full-page New York Times ad to expose the truth: people across the spectrum are united behind Internet freedom! If we get that message out, we win."

https://civ.moveon.org/donatec4/save_the_internet.html

From the ad:

"The free and open Internet has empowered everyday people across the political spectrum
to speak out, to be heard, and to effect change. Imagine an Internet operator which didn’t
like the views of MoveOn.org Civic Action or the Christian Coalition. Without Internet
freedom, they could legally slow down our sites or block them altogether."
