5. 8 out of 10
people have an interest in the stock market. Weather it by your 401 at work, or profit sharing at work, or stock options. Do not tell me that if the market goes down, the president is going to get a pass. Do not tell me that the market is not a reflection of the economy. Do you actually think that people will buy stock (ownership) in a company that is doing poorly?

Take an economic course or read the WSJ once in a while. CNBC is another option.

2. Just Because You're Not In The Top Few Percent....
How Dare You rain on their parade! Just because you're in the middle class, and have very little invested in the market, doesn't mean that things are not going FABULOUSLY well for that upper 1-2% who have MILLIONS in stocks.

This is wonderful news for those folks. And it's all due to the fantastic economic policies put in place by the party of the rich.

At least you're not a MORON. My secretary lives paycheck to paycheck, yet still thinks the repubs are looking out for her.

She owns less than $1,000 in the stock market, yet this morning she was telling me how great it is that the market is at a new high.

These are the MORONS who will do whatever they can to destroy our country. So far so good.

as her boss don't you have somthing to say about her pay rate? Or are you just like the "Evil Rich" trying to keep it all to your self and keep the workers oppressed.

3. Very Little
It should also be noted thst stock market performance is not a good measure of the American economy. Why? Because of the multinational dimensions of most of the companies included. Capital, production and consumption are matters which are of international scope.

4. Well... you see...
When a company lays off thousands of people its stock goes up. When a company gets sued or or charged for violating workers rights, its stock price goes up. This is not to be confused with investing in something because one believes its a worthwhile business pursuit... only fools invest in anything because they believe in the product anymore. but if a company decides to lower the wages of all their employees, then THAT will get the attention of investors.

6. Absolutely nothing.
The Stock Markets are simply a rigged game that millions are forced to participate in for the benefit of the very few that own it. It is a game of predict which way the herd will be driven today.

There are even good arguments that the stock market is a counter-indicator of the economy.

15. Your initial reply makes it clear that you are not interested in discourse
and that there is zero percent chance of changing your mind.

You stated that the market is rigged, you know this how? Who is "forced" to use it. You can put your retirement in a govt bond at 2% interest if you want. No one is forcing anyone to pick a Vanguard fund as thier retirement vehicle. They you state that there are good arguments which I responded to by saying they may not be "good".

If you want to just post stuff and not have to worry about people disagreeing with you, start your own site, and edit all the posts. All you did was state your belief and then a statement without any reference.

20. I answered the OP with my opinion, you are the one that jumped in.
I've spent too many years pointing out the facts and history to go around again with another convert. You like the market? Great, more power to you.

It still has nothing to do with the economy. :hi:

9. Almost back to Clinton levels!!!
Of course the stock market has something to do with the economy. Think about it. In a normal progression, the stock market outpaces pathetic passbook savings account interest. Enter Bush, November 2000. Stock market tumbles, as everyone knows the shrub will hose things up. Over time, normal progression brings it back to the same NUMBER level that it was at 6 years ago. BUT WAIT - Inflation? Does 12,000 now mean 12,000 six years ago? NO! (pulling a Rumsfeld there)

So, the market dive the Bush throne created has ALMOST recovered, but it still has about 1,800 points to go to keep up with the value of the dollar, and that's if you accept the government's view that excludes the artificially inflated gas prices.

So yes, the market does have something to do with the economy - it proves we're NOT BETTER OFF than we were six years ago.

Enjoy

14. Me too
I am up 80% over investment over the past 6 years. Got a good return coming on a Jan 08 55 call on BNI. Up $6 in 3 weeks, give me another 3 or 4 and I am out. This is a great market.
