Gops told: Don't worry, Lieberman may hold the balance of power
No Spoils for the Victors
By BRUCE BARTLETT

...As a Republican, I have a message for those fearful of Democratic control: don’t worry. Nothing dreadful is going to happen. Liberals have much less to gain than they believe.
...
If they get the Senate as well, it will not be with more than a one-vote margin. Consequently, effective control will be in the hands of moderates who often work with Republicans on specific issues. In a delicious bit of irony, Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, lately excoriated by the liberal wing of the Democratic Party, may end up holding the balance of power in the Senate.

2. They are grasping at straws
As recent as yesterday there was an article saying Lieberman would caucus with the Democrats

3. that issue has been raised before
It doesn't necessarily work to the advantage of the GOP, who hate their moderates almost as much as the left hates Democratic moderates.

If the senate is close, especially if Webb, Ford, and Casey win, moderates will rule.

4. First, Lieberman would have to win
I think that outcome is still up in the air.
But even if he wins, he's said he will caucus with the Democrats, so that eliminates the "balance of power" issue in general. As for legislative agenda -- its always been the case that moderate/conservative Democrats like Nelson of NE, Landrieu of LA, etc. will drive the party towards the middle.

5. Lieberman may be a moderate but he's not
a republican moderate. A republican moderate takes his klan robes to the dry cleaners.

6. He has indeed said he will caucus with the Democrats
but how much can you rely on anything this lying sack of shit ever says? To me it's just as important to get rid of Loserman as Macaca, Santorectum, or Mr. Burns. I don't believe the Dems can count on Joe in a pinch.

7. I trust him to the point
that he's afraid of what would happen if he sided a little too much with the republicans. He'd face a hastily drafted but veto-proof recall law in Connecticut if he ever truly switched sides and he likes the cushy life of a Senator too much to risk it.
