It's True: Bush Declares 'National Character Counts Week'

To paraphrase Forrest Gump, going to the White House web site is like a box of chocolates… you never know what you're gonna get. It may be some hilarious prevarication by press secretary Tony Snow or it may be the usual verbal bumbling or outright lies by George W. Bush in one of his speeches. But one place that's always sure to give you a you-can't-make-this-stuff-up moment, is going to the section giving Bush's presidential proclamations.

In 2006 alone, we've seen hypocritical celebrations that included the irony of Child Health Day -- from an administration that's done nothing to make American children healthier -- to a warmonger like Bush lauding Prayer for Peace day and the grotesque spectacle of Gold Star Mother's Day being heralded by a man who is responsible for creating so many new Gold Star Mothers.

We have another one to add to that collection because, whether you realize it or not, we're smack-dab in the middle of what Bush has officially proclaimed National Character Counts Week. It runs October 15 through October 21 and is intended, according to Bush, to "renew our commitment to instilling values in our young people and to encouraging all Americans to remember the importance of good character."

"As individuals, we all have an obligation to help our children become responsible citizens and realize their full potential," reads the Bush proclamation. "By demonstrating values such as integrity, courage, honesty, and patriotism, all Americans can help our children develop strength and character."

Fortunately, in our household, we have a child who truly is being taught these values and we hold up this president and his lying, corrupt administration as examples of everything our little boy does not want to be.

Of every president in United States history, how hypocritical is it for George W. Bush to talk about integrity and honesty? This is a guy who ran for president saying that "it’s time to restore honor and dignity to the White House" and then proceeded to set new records for lying to the American people, while making the United States the most despised, disrespected country in the world.

The president who speaks so stridently about honesty is the same guy who got people to vote for him by claiming over and over that he was a "uniter not a divider" and then went on to bitterly divide this country more than it has been since our own Civil War.

And, sadly, the biggest example of this administration's adherence to honesty and integrity is how they lied about weapons of mass destruction and the bogus connection between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden to force us to war with Iraq -- and continued to do so even after evidence to the contrary became public knowledge.

"We found the weapons of mass destruction. We found biological laboratories...for those who say we haven't found the banned manufacturing devices or banned weapons, they're wrong, we found them," said Bush in May of 2003, despite the fact that, well, that wasn't true.

I also don’t recall in grades K-12, my time in the military or my subsequent four years of college leaning that it was part of our national "character" to unilaterally invade a sovereign country with no justification and with no direct threat to us but, hey, maybe I missed that day of class. I'm also pretty damn sure that our national character isn't embodied in the number of Republicans who have been nailed for everything from accepting bribes to money laundering in the last few years and I think the court of public opinion has already weighed in on how much character it takes for the GOP to launch a major cover-up to protect one of their pedophiles in Congress.

I don’t have the space required to outline every bit of dishonesty and lack of character shown by Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and their whole cabal of miscreants, but it also includes Bush lying about his party's wedge issue of the new decade -- gay marriage.

"The state can do what they want to do. Don't try to trap me in this state's issue like you're trying to get me into," said Bush, to Larry King, while running for president in 2000. Of course, we know what's happened since -- gotta pay those debts to the Religious Right -- because there was Bush in February of 2004 saying "Today I call upon the Congress to promptly pass, and to send to the states for ratification, an amendment to our Constitution defining and protecting marriage as a union of man and woman as husband and wife."

Bush ends his stirring proclamation saying "National Character Counts Week is an opportunity to recognize the depth of America's character and appreciate those who pass on our values to future generations."

It's a good thing that our children learning honesty, integrity and character begins at home or the "future generations" might waste time looking for it in this president, his administration and the Republican-controlled Congress -- which, of course, would be like trying to find WMD in Iraq.

National Character Counts Week, 2006
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

America's strength is found in the spirit and character of our people. During National Character Counts Week, we renew our commitment to instilling values in our young people and to encouraging all Americans to remember the importance of good character.
As the primary teachers and examples of character, parents help create a more compassionate and decent society. And as individuals, we all have an obligation to help our children become responsible citizens and realize their full potential. By demonstrating values such as integrity, courage, honesty, and patriotism, all Americans can help our children develop strength and character.
Countless individuals throughout our country demonstrate character by volunteering their time and energy to help neighbors in need. The men and women of our Armed Forces set an example of character by bravely putting the security of our Nation before their own lives. We also see character in the family members, teachers, coaches, and other dedicated individuals whose hearts are invested in the future of our children.
Our changing world requires virtues that sustain our democracy, make self-government possible, and help build a more hopeful future. National Character Counts Week is an opportunity to recognize the depth of America's character and appreciate those who pass on our values to future generations.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 15 through October 21, 2006, as National Character Counts Week. I call upon public officials, educators, librarians, parents, students, and all Americans to observe this week with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirteenth day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-first.
GEORGE W. BUSH

9. "Character Counts" is a YMCA Program
Both my kids have gone to YMCA Day Camp for their summer daycare since they were little. The YMCA Character Counts program teaches Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility, and kids get a colored bead for each quality when they are "caught" displaying it. It is a great program for a summer camp, but hypocritical coming from this criminal Administration. -- Wanet

21. Proclamation signed on Friday the 13th by GWB?
The proclamation is really good; someone there knows the difference between "right" & "wrong"? Someone is trying to make us think they are "good" while all the time doing "evil"? The world is de-stabilizing more every day because of such bad GWB decisions?

What was that Karl Rove 2004 quote: “Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 in the attacks and prepared for war; liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers."

For "Evangelical Christian" roots, such hatred is akin to the ancient religious leaders killing Jesus? "That Jesus liberal, all he wants to do is heal and forgive people, we simply cannot have that. People are following him in mass?" Jewish Rabbi Leaders 0 A.D.

Dr. Dobson, Pat Roberson & Jerry Falwell all support the Iraq war, the killing and the hatred of the GOP & GWB. Pedophile Mark Foley is just the tip of the iceberg; what else are they hiding. Talk about evil disguised as "the angel of light"? The Revelation's Anti-Christ is here, and they make Hitler and the Nazi Party look like amateurs?

I don't see how any follower of Jesus and the peace & love that he taught can ever vote GOP now? If they do, they simply don't get it! What hypocrisy!

27. Ethical vs Moral
Hey, do you want the votes or what?

Martin Luther King Jr. was a minister & led the "60s moral voting rights issues" and changed the Democratic Party, and our nation. Gandhi was a religious leader & changed India? Do not exclude religious America, if you want any hope of a future of the Democratic Party; and do not confuse the "GOP religious nuts & Muslim Terrorist" with moral believers of any faith. I would say by your comments you are very, very young and haven't seen much history first hand? Embrace all democrats, and we might have a chance to win; or are we just another two-face like the GOP? Either you are for all of "the people" or just another "GOP elitist group" with a different name? Or is the Democratic party only for the Atheist & Agnostics; if so, you will never lead America again because you simply do not understand American Demographics.

An ethical person know the difference between right & wrong, but does the wrong thing anyway; a moral person simply doesn't do it!

28. Good & Evil
Good - A person of faith tries to change himself and no one else, always trying to do good, hopefully for everyone.
Evil - A person emulates faith, to control, manipulate and deceive other for personal gain, to everyones detriment.

Global warming evil - Environment good?
Corporate greed evil - social programs good?
War evil - Peace good?
GOP lies evil - Democratic hope good?
get the idea?

If you want to attract bees, use honey instead of vinegar? Learn the language of everyone & embrace all. Pay closer attention to the speeches of Barack Obama & Bill Clinton, you might learn someting...

39. Lincoln, Truman & Johnson
Yep, just like "Emancipation", "Desegration" and the "voting rights act" for Black Americans!

All changed American Politics - Unfortunatly, so did "The Contract with America", now in default of contract breach.

We need a renewal of American Politics; of the people, by the people and for the people!

"Illegial Alians" is code for haters of hispanic peoples; "Terroist" is code for Muslim haters; "New Orleans" wasn't code, Barbara Bush came right out and said it. Is it me or do I detect a hatred for anyone not white? The Racist Democrats of the 50s & 60s all backed Nixon, Reagan & Both Bush's GOP. They are not what Lincoln had in mind, nor are they Christian by any stretch of moral standards.

I am happy to report my wife was a long life Republican & because of "W" and the GOP of today, we have a brand new lifelong Democrat (assuming they don't blow it to). Me, I have always been a moderate voting for the person; but not anymore!

47. To Enjoy Our Lives, We Must Work Through Problems
As I sit here and write this, I listen to the Cranberries
"To The Faithful Departed" and I say that character
is important to help us live the lives we want to live.
There are many things to enjoy in this life, music being
one of them, that should inspire us to try to live to the
betterment of everyone, with respect to the people who can
lead us into the future and into other worlds I hope.
I hope that those reading this will combine a desire to
be happy with the long term vision of human progress, a
difficult problem.
We always hope that we can combine things we enjoy with
things that do good for everyone. But there are obviously
many things wrong with the world we live in. I am hoping that
people can realize that having great wealth is a problem that
we must deal with. It does not take great wealth to live a
good and happy life I believe. So those that seek to have
everything at the expense of the rest of us are the problem
that is first on our list of problems to confront.
We can't trust the people who give us what we want to be
in our long term interest. So as I listen to the music, I
realize the tradeoff. People are good at some things, and not
necessarily good at other things. People that make you happy
are not always your friends. We must work this out over the
long run.
We are hoping the Democrats will win this November,
that's the main focus, whatever our life activity. That will
likely be a buffer on the worst of things that can happen.
For the long run, we hope that the people who are best
suited to lead us into the future, perhaps for a long time,
will be allowed to take their place in society and help us
all. I believe that we can all contribute to the betterment
of humanity, but understanding the way things are and how they
work is important for anyone who wishes to live in such a
world. There are many difficult and complicated issues to
think about, but I believe that a balanced approach to
politics and economics will give us time to live and
understand what is happening. I wish you success in your
attempt to help yourself and those who wish to make things
better. Good Luck.
