"It's a ship of fools. We're on the edge of a disaster."--WES CLARK
Couldn't have said it better myself!

Clark sweeps through state, assailing Bush

At stops in Ozark, Montgomery, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, the Democrat sounded traditional liberal themes on social issues and fired broadsides at the Bush administration for its handling of the war in Iraq and the nuclear crisis in North Korea.

"It's a ship of fools," Clark said. "We're on the edge of a disaster."

Clark said the goal of his series of stops in several Southern states is to help the party develop a strategy for competing in the South, where many of its candidates lag far behind the Republicans in polls. To that end, he made appearances with candidates including John Tyson, who is running for attorney general, and at party fund-raisers.

But most of his energy while in Birmingham was devoted to addressing what he said was a series of foreign-policy blunders by the Bush administration.

In an interview before a meeting of the Downtown Democratic Club, Clark repeated an allegation made in his book "Winning Modern Wars: Iraq, Terrorism, and the American Empire." He wrote that a general at the Pentagon told him 10 days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that the Bush administration was already committed to invading Iraq. He declined to identify the general Friday.

Retired Gen. Wesley Clark questions foreign policy
TUSCALOOSA | Retired U.S. Army Gen. Wesley Clark, a former and possibly future presidential candidate, took the Bush administration to task on practically all its foreign policy initiatives Friday.

“When your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail," Clark told about 400 people at the second annual Frank A. Nix lecture, sponsored by the Blackburn Institute at the University of Alabama
snip
Clark said the administration must talk directly with North Korea, which says it tested a nuclear weapon last weekend.

“They want to come out of the cold on their terms," he said. “We may not agree with those terms, but are we so weak that we are afraid to talk to North Korea, that all we can do is hide behind China and threaten them?"

Direct talks with Iran, which has also shown signs of seeking nuclear weapons, would also be productive, Clark said.

“Maybe we could find some common interests," he said. “They probably don’t want a big war in Iraq, either.

“We’ve got to use our power to build relationships," he said. “To win the war on terror, you’ve got to have more friends than enemies in the world."
snip
Clark said Bush is playing into the hands of bin Laden, who has about 50,000 hardcore supporters behind him.

Bin Laden’s strategy, Clark said, is to encourage the U.S. to invade Iran and Syria.

“His strategy is to create zones of chaos and savagery," Clark said. “He wants more Iraqs … where he can go in and emerge with leadership.

“Why do we want to play his game, when it is totally against our interests?"

The Blackburn Institute was formed by former UA administrator John Blackburn and is composed of several dozen students.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was the speaker at the first Nix lecture, named after the late educator Frank Albert Nix, last year.

7. That's simply not the truth
This isn't the first name by which I've known you. I also know that you go to every Clark friendly thread you can find, here, at Kos, at Clark Community Network etc. before being shown the door, to keep hyping this story of yours, but at least do it honestly. Say "please read my amazing wonderful great story" if you must, but the claim you just made is not only false, it is insulting to the General himself to claim your story is everything that anyone needs to know about him that is at all worth knowing.

8. so odd to hear you say that, Tom
Are you actually trying to say that there is stuff about him outside of my story that is also worth knowing and that readers here would think I literally meant EVERYTHING?
It sure is odd that despite Noel's initial very positive reaction, the quote I've provided from that WWII vet and the fact that someone liked it enough to post in their homepage as an exclusive that y'all still shun this. Very weird. Laborgroups.org is where it's posted: http://laborgroups.org/

btw, I set up a hyperlink in it to your great electoral math diary, under the word "UPGRADE"

Yes I write, non fiction, about Clark from time to time, but I would never promote anything I wrote about him as being definitive. Clark has two books out and probably well over a hunderd speeches and Op-Ed pieces, not to mention all of the many transcritps available of his various media appearances. I try to point people to Clark's own web site if they want to know more about him, and his writings.

10. I just like the way WES keeps his FOOT UP this administration's ASS!
Edited on Mon Oct-16-06 03:18 AM by FrenchieCat
Some main kick ass points made:
The administration is "scared" of dealing with North Korea directly
and
Bush is doing Osama Bin Laden's bidding!

No matter who you are, one has to admit that these are some damning worded charges made against the GOP's mucked up Foreign Policy! Pretty straightfoward and clear and I like that! No bravado.....just fucking facts shared by the General: Bushco is doing everything wrong.....and Wes is making sure that as many as possible that are listening will understand this.

Too bad his coverage is so limited!

So for what it's worth, you can only find these zingers if your read the local presses or the Internet; this devastating tear down of the Bush Cabal and their rubber stamp congress.

Ironic that we don't hear any of what he is saying about what's going on right now with our messed up Foreign policy in the national press; maybe cause they are so busy covering the hand picked Democratic nominees for 2008? Makes me wonder why that is?

Clark has been touring the deep south heavily (as well as the southwest). I believe this to be a sound strategy for the Democrats in order to get our Democratic National Security Plans (of which we have many) out to those who will matter the most in the upcoming election. Lines up very nicely with Chairman Dean's 50 state plan.

Too bad the Corporate national media is trying so hard to be "in charge" of our democratic process! And that they bother to run stories that distract instead of add to the business at hand; election 2006! :(

Edited on Mon Oct-16-06 08:37 PM by FrenchieCat
It's a combination of an article that came out in 2003-2004 in where Clark clearly stated he was against Media conglamoration, and was for bringing back the Equal time fairness doctrine; the fact that he got kicked off CNN during Iraq coverage for being "too political" (he dared say negative things towards the Bush admin as we were marching into war);not helped by his son bad mouthing the media and calling them unfair (which they were, of course); coupled with the fact that he would turn the pentagon upside down including the MIC; coupled with the fact that like Dean and Kucinich, he reminds the media of their complicity in the rush to war back in 2002/2003; add to the fact that he would confuse voters who are supposed to believe that Democrats have no plan on iraq....you see, there's an endless number of reasons why the corporate media boosts who they boost, and who they don't.

Wes Clark refuses to be bought, and so, as far as they are concerned, he is not a player.
He would not be controllable by the "powers that be".
So they decided back in November of 2003 that he should just "fade away"....like a good soldier. It hasn't worked up to now, but they ain't gonna give up just yet.

What Clark has done about this? .....come up with a plan B--
#1. He became part of the media via his stint at Fox, so folks still get his message on national security on a national level (he was on Fox this Sunday talking about the proliferation treaty that the Bush admin nixed....and the fact that this has got to change in reference to the topic that 40 nations may be or become Nuclear capable).

#2. Bipassing the national media by going state to state and getting excellent coverage in the local papers and standing up for candidates all over the south, southwest and Midwest. Also having pacs like the VoteVets.Org pac that made one of the best ad in reference to national defense and treatment of our troops. As well, he's become the voice for the democratic leadership in congress on national security.

#3. Wes Talks to bloggers all of the time, understanding that they have the power to get his message out, regardless of the corporate media.

Will his treatment by the national media change? Only if Clark gets enough big money donors and establishment endorsements. It is possible that many elected in the Democratic party will start to see that he is a powerful weapon and would be a formidable opponent to most if not all GOP candidates that might get put up during election 2008 (McCain/tortured soldier vs. Clark/wounded General who won a war...Romney/Good looking guy Governor vs. Clark/good looking guy with National Security experience.....Giulani/Mr. 9/11 vs. Clark/emergency preparedness expertise who also won a war.......who else do they have?

that said, however, I am not as optimistic that he will ever be heard over the pundit chatter that so many of us love to hear when it's about our guy. But that part is up to us. The choice is clear; let the pundits choose for us, or tell the pundits to kiss our ass....via letters, etc....

Short answer--We shall see.

45. Well....what if he chose for a running mate a
black, gay, woman? (Just kidding.) But seriously, there is such opportunity right now, and such a dearth of choices outside the political mainstream, it does seem like it will take something EXTREMELY newsworthy to get him in the limelight.

I'm not even saying I support him (yet) - - although you all do a great job making a case for him, but it would be nice to see him and his ideas get more exposure.

which for Wes Clark would be harder than winning a general election, IMO. But if anyone, he's the one Dem tough enough to run with virtually any person of any race, sex or sexual orientation....cause he's perceived as such a straight up tough guy.

Yes, something extraordinary would have to happen for the corporate media to start covering him, that is true. I agree with you on that. Sad for our country, but realistically speaking....fair to say.

54. His media positions make me like Clark even more. But...
...I'm afraid he'll be one of the good "little" candidates that get lost in the rush to see one of the Big Three nominated: Clinton, Gore or Kerry.

I will say this: whoever winds up with the Democratic nomination ought to use his or her brain for a change, and propose that the "losers for the nomination" be given Cabinet posts. If Clark doesn't get the nomination (which seems likely) he should at least get an appointment as FCC commissioner.

56. Well, please don't count the General out just yet.........
That's what the media wants you to do. They have wanted his ass to disappear for some time; don't make it easy for them by going along with their program. You don't want to depress us, who are working so hard to have our voices and those we respect heard by nonchalantely giving us this kind of undemocratic forecast.

and considering that we should be working towards a democratic congress THIS election, let's not wait to revise the FCC till 2008....cause hell, by that time it may be too late. The FCC rules should be one of the first challenges along with a "clean" election bill that would demand Paper Ballots sans machines for every state. We've got a lot of work to do before election 2008, and if we have a democratic congress, I would hope that the condition of the media and our elections would be the first things addressed, or else the next election, as previous, may not be our own!

PS. Wes Clark would be much more valuable as a Sec of State than as FCC Chairman, IMO if not on a national ticket..... Although I could see his son serving in that capacity. Now that would be a hoot!

22. I object to General Clark's use of the phrase "ship of fools," in that
it's far too charitable and diplomatic.

I propose he substitute a more accurate phrase to describe the Bush administration's management of Iraq.

Could he change "a ship of fools" to "a raft of rodents"?

But other than that, I'd say in speaking the truth, he's left it for his audiences to do their part now and vote out as many Republicans as they can possibly vote out on Nov. 7th.

27. Cue World Party:
We're setting sail
To the place on the map
From which no one has ever returned
Drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool
By the light of the crosses that burn
Drawn by the promise of the women and the lace
And the gold and the cotton and pearls
It's the place where they keep all the darkness you need
You sail away from the light of the world
On this trip, baby

You will pay tomorrow
You gonna pay tomorrow
You will pay tomorrow

Save me
Save me from tomorrow
I don't want to sail in this ship of fools
Save me
Save me from tomorrow
I don't want to sail in this ship of fools

I want to run and hide
Right now...

Avarice and greed
Are gonna drive you over the endless sea
They will leave you drifting in the shallows
Or drowning in the oceans of history
Traveling the world
You're in search of no good
But I'm sure you'll build your Sodom
Like you knew you would
Using all the good people
For your galley slaves
As your little boat struggles
Through the warning waves

But you don't pay
You will pay tomorrow
You gonna pay tomorrow
You gonna pay tomorrow

Where's it coming from?
Where's it going to?
It's just a ship of fools...

Here we go...
All aboard...

34. The link worked for me.
Preface to The Switch

The Switch is a story built on the notion that, aside from those who are clinically insane, Bush supporters only exist due to being seriously ill-informed. But if you could wave a magic wand to make them all cognizant of the facts then his support would completely evaporate...and it doesn't take magic to communicate information.

It starts off as a metaphor for progress but by page 3 the spanking begins. Yes, 40 pages is long, but that's because there's that much to spank him for. See for yourself why the mother of a soldier in Iraq said that she was honored to have read it and why a woman who rarely reads couldn't put it down; and admitted afterwards that she shouldn't have voted for Bush…

"Democracy is the most difficult of all forms of government, since it requires the widest spread of intelligence..." ~ Will Durant

"Freedom is always in danger, and the majority of mankind will always acquiesce in its loss, unless a minority is willing to challenge the privileges of its few and the apathy of the masses." ~ R.H.S. Crossman

"The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object." ~ Thomas Jefferson

"...A battering ram doesn't work if you hold it sideways." ~ Jeff Poster

35. Thank you, Clarkies
for posting the many underreported stories about Wes Clark.

Clark is saying things that need to be heard by all Americans, particularly those that have deluded themselves into thinking that Bush have made us "safer."

40. Hello Leilani.....I haven't seen you round these parts in a while!
Nice to hear from you! :hi:

Were you on the island that suffered the earthquake this week-end?

If so, is all OK?

57. Hi Frenchie!!!
:hi:

I had to take a break from discussion board wars...wasn't good for my blood pressure, if you know what I mean.

But I haven't changed my mind about the General. :patriot:

As far as the earthquake, I'm in Honolulu & we rocked & rolled. Luckily, no damage.

The Big Island of Hawaii received the major damage, but no deaths. We were very lucky.

42. General Clark reminds me of General Eisenhower
I think he'd make a great president, but in today's climate, he's much more useful as a vice president who could help a Democrat win in the South and win with the NASCAR dads.

49. I just watched the entire University of Alabama speech. It's Clark's best
Edited on Mon Oct-16-06 09:36 PM by Clarkie1
in a long while, perhaps his best ever. Particulary the 2nd half of the speech. The first half is spent building the background for where we are now, unfolding the full sweep of history to reveal how we got here. The 2nd half is about looking at the world realistically today, and where we can go from here to regain our moral standing in the world and promote peace and prosperity. The question and answer session is excellent as well...discusses Iraqis, Christianity, Islam, and how the administration is on a path to rerun the crusades of the 12th century, and playing right into Bin Laden's hands.

link is up on the home page.

I tell, there are some choice soundbites (although soundbites don't do the entire speech justice). Lot's of material for discussion. It says transcript will be up soon.

64. I like this comment...
on an Alabama blog about Wes' time in Alabama....although I think the writer is speaking of an appearance earlier in the day, rather than this one...

"Heard Clark speak today. Impressive. If he runs in 2008, he could win the Alabama Democratic primary. Heck, he could win Alabama’s GOP primary as a write-in: he is that impressive." - http://www.politicsinalabama.com/?p=903

52. Good for him
Clark carries a lot of credibility, and this will help to solidify our chances of taking over Congress next month.

63. Thanks for posting this. I listened to his Alabama speech
and was very impressed. I have a friend who has been selling Clark to me for a long time, and I haven't listened because I didn't think he had the clout to win. So I worked the Kerry campaign and was very disappointed.

I like that Clark has such a good grasp of the issues, and is actually offering what "the plan" might be. I remember with Kerry we were told to campaign saying that he had "a plan" but I never felt confident of any plan, even while making the phone calls.

And then of course, he caved.

I'm going to try to learn more about Clark.
