Reddest of Colorado Districts TIED!!- Denver Post
The unthinkable IS possible in the reddest of districts in Colorado! Fawcett is one of the fighting Dems and endorsed by Wes Clark. Can we now get some money down here????

SNIPPET:
Colorado Springs - In what may be the starkest depiction yet of the challenges Republicans face in maintaining control of Congress, a new poll shows the party is fighting to hold on to a traditionally Republican seat in Colorado Springs.

No Democrat has won in the 5th Congressional District since it was created in 1972, but Democrat Jay Fawcett is tied with Republican Doug Lamborn, according to a poll conducted for The Denver Post by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research.

Fawcett and Lamborn each have 37 percent of the votes, while 26 percent of voters in the six-county district remain undecided. The poll was conducted Oct. 3 through Saturday and included 400 likely voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

"It appears that Lamborn is now the first Republican who has ever had to fight hard to take that seat," said Bob Loevy, political-science professor at Colorado College. "A seat that should not have been competitive for the Democratic Party, as a result of a number of unusual events coming together - if the poll is correct - now appears to be competitive."
Kate Bedingfield, spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said she believes the scandal involving U.S. Rep. Mark Foley's sexually explicit e-mails to teen congressional pages may have influenced the poll results.

Foley, a Florida Republican, has resigned.

"Given the current climate, there is no such thing as a safe Republican seat," she said.

Bedingfield declined to say, however, if the party would pump money into the race. The DCCC has a policy of not commenting on how it will spend money, she said.

10. Giving this thread another kick for visibility
which gives me a chance to ask you if you'll be able to make the DU meetup this Saturday? I sent you (and about fifteen others) an e-mail.

Oh yeah, if you can and haven't, can you recommend this thread for the "greatest page"? Thanks or thanks in advance.

11. Hey Mabus!
I just read the email about the meetup and would love to come, but I may have another commitment. I'll let you know before Saturday, because I may need a ride to KC. Our van is in the shop. Anyway...

Another kick, and already recommended.

Woohoo for the Democrats! :woohoo:

another DU'er contacted me and may want a ride too. I think we can all (assuming your husband's coming) fit in the car. The more the merrier. I know it's short notice but Proud, evl, Comer and I all wanted to get together.

On edit: If you have a commitment, don't worry. We'll try to plan the next one so we can give everyone plenty of time. We were actually going to meet on Sunday but changed it to Saturday because some Lawrence people are going to the Iraq for Sale showing at the Unitarian Church south of town.

15. Wes Clark is endorsing a lot of Dark Horses and is KICKING ASS!
When all is said and done, he and the Band of Brothers will have made more of an impact to flip the house then the DLCC could ever dream of.

Wes Clark is assembling a well oiled machine in the process, too. Watch out repubs in 2008!

16. Kicked and recommended.
For those who don't know, Colorado Springs is basically the capital city of Jesusland West. It's deep fundie territory, with a heavy military presence to boot. To be drawing dead with a Republican in that district is like being in winning Orange county California on a platform of raising taxes for the rich. It's unheard of.

as do probably many of his minions in his cult. Seems to have lost their way.

18. Methinks the Air Force Academy is nearby, too.
Don't discount the fact that the Air Force boys, despite being the reddest branch of service, might hold some sort of loyalty to the military by supporting the Fighting Dems (Band of Brothers), Wes Clark, and Fawcett, an Air Force Academy graduate who retired as a lieutenant colonel. Iffy, but I think the combination might count for something.

19. Yes the Academy is in the district
It certainly doesn't hurt the the retiring republican congressman, Hefley, refuses to endorse Lamborn. I think the biggest obstacle to Fawcett right now is his lack of exposure and name recognition. We need more money and advertising to get him out there.

So far, there has been one debate but, it was in Canon City, not Colorado Springs. Supposedly, Lamborn has agreed to debate Fawcett in the Springs but, details have not emerged. From what I've heard from others who were at the debate, Fawcett cleaned the floor with Lamborn and left even die-hard Republicans in attendance shaking their heads in shame. If we can get to the independents and the righties stay home out of disgust, Jay Fawcett could be the first Democratic representative from the 5th district!

21. Exposure and name recognition is kinda essential, and
the need for more money for advertising is always the rub. Has DCCC offered anything? I'm getting testy with them because I'm supporting Charlie Brown, another Fighting Dem endorsed by Wes Clark, and Charlie's poised to take down Doolittle, yet getting money from them has been slow at best. Shout it out "Don't save it for a rainy day, it's raining TODAY dammit!"

20. Yes, Dobson and the USAFA are in that district
They are each five minutes from my house. Dobson has always sucked, but despite the recent scandals at the Academy they have always been a good community neighbor and although they deserve critisism for their recent problems, I won't condemn them outright. I hope they'll soon get back to the good ol' days up there at the end of Academy Boulevard.

Oh, and.... kick!

Glad to see people posting in this thread.

22. Focus on the Family has its own state-issued highway sign
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 09:25 PM by rhiannon55
marking the exit on the north end of Colorado Springs that is closest to the place. Pissed me off when I first saw it on a trip through there a few years ago. Made it look like FOTF was simply another nice little tourist attraction that the state was proud to let us know about. Like the Garden of the Gods or Pikes Peak. Sheesh! The taxpayers probably paid for that sign. :grr:

25. What's really scary
is that FOTF is the second biggest attraction in the Springs! Second to Pike's Peak. The Springs has many wonderful attractions and people go to the fortress?!? It's unfathomable to me, but true.
