How many of you understand what Dennis Kucinich is doing in this race?
I've been on DemocraticUnderground for over two years. In all the time I have been here, the one thing I have seen posted more than any other - more than "Your candidate sucks!" even - is this: The Democratic Party requires serious, fundamental change from the top down. The matter was so pressing, in fact, that I wrote about it over two years ago:

Published on Monday, November 19, 2001

The Dawn of a New Democratic Party
by William Rivers Pitt

http://www.commondreams.org/views01/1119-08.htm

(snip)

It has become an article of faith since January 20th, 2001, that the Democratic chieftains who walk the halls of power in Washington D.C. can not be trusted to fight for this agenda. When the results of the scandalous 2000 election were ratified in Congress, only the Black Caucus had the courage to turn their backs in protest. When religious extremist John Ashcroft stood for nomination as Attorney General, no true opposition was offered.

Today, as the 4th, 6th and 13th Amendments to the Constitution are disposed of, as Posse Comitatus is replaced by clandestine military tribunals that know no civil authority, the Democrats stand almost completely silent. Only the timely defection of Senator James Jeffords has allowed Democrats to thwart Republican thrusts into the Federal larder and our environmental inheritance. Had Jeffords not jumped, there would be no stopping the GOP.

(snip)

Thus, it falls to us. We must become the calcium in the withered Democratic backbone, and we must do it now.

Writing to these people is useless. Protesting against the President will bear no fruit. Letters to the editor go unread. Emails to like-minded friends amount to political masturbation. We are a people made too comfortable by pleasant arguments and debates. The day has arrived where action is demanded, else all that happens from here on out can be lain at our own feet. The document in question says We The People for a good reason.

Take heed of conservative successes. They ran for state representative positions, took over school boards, got jobs in local government and basically stormed the bulwarks of the Republican Party from the bottom of the walls. It took ten years, but they did it, and the Presidency of George W. Bush is but one reward they have reaped by their labors. The media is awash with the conservative viewpoint because they commandeered the dialogue after years of grass-roots work. This is another reward, one that ensures their continued success.

To overcome this, we must become it.

The only reason the Democrats moved to the right is because of the aforementioned conservative grass-roots revolution. The Party had nothing to counteract the surge of conservatism that blasted through Washington, no shock troops of their own, so they swung Rightward in order to survive. Now, the Parties are slowly becoming indistinguishable. They are not yet there, no matter what Ralph Nader says, but they are on their way and this can not be denied.

It has been argued that true progressives will never find a home in the Democratic Party, because it has sold too much of its soul in a hard tack to the right borne of defensive strategy and political expediency. This leaves two alternatives: either abandon the Party completely, or roll up some sleeves and clean out the Augean stables.

Despite its flaws, the Democratic Party is the best tool we have available for the propagation of the liberal, progressive agenda. The Party have faithful followers in every state, and unconquerable strongholds on both coasts. The Democratic political machine stands in every county in every state in the Union. There are doubtless men and women in the U.S. House of Representatives who would savor the chance to act upon principle, instead of from a core of self-defense, a chance we can give them if we get to work now.

The time has come to invade this Party, to storm the battlements from the ground up. The Democratic Party can again become a bastion of true liberalism, as the Republican Party has become a bastion of ultraconservatism, if American progressives take it over from pillar to post. If we take back the Party, if we change the dialogue coming from the media through the brute reality of our strident and unyielding voices, if we tend and nurture that flame of new comprehension blazing in every American breast, we can achieve all that our dreams have whispered.

Most within the Party will welcome this, I believe. Those who do not can be reminded of the wisdom spoken by an old politico named James H. Rowe: "The old bulls never quit until the young bulls run them out. The old bulls are dead."

Master the issues. Walk down to your local Democratic Party office and find work. Take as much responsibility as you can, and make it your office. Run for positions on your school board, or within your local government, or stand for election to your state congress. If you can not do these things, find someone who is doing them and dedicate your energies to their success. Run the old bulls out, and harness the young bulls to plow new fields. Make the Party a home for everyone who knows in their heart that things must change in this country before the targets can be stripped from our backs.

It will take time and patience. There is a window of opportunity to act in time for the 2002 elections, but the target should be 2004. Don't look to the Oval office, for working from the top down has bred a dizzying array of recent failures. Go from the ground up, one step at a time.

What a paradise we can make of this world if given the chance. The chance will not come on its own. We must make it, take it, demand it, fight for it tooth and nail.

Get to work.

At the time, that article represented the bedrock mindset of the vast majority of DUers. I think, probably, a lot of people here still feel that way. Certainly, the fuel that propels a great many Dean supporters here is the idea that he represents the advent of that coming change. Frustration at his showings thus far, compounded by the evisceration he took from the media, goes beyond Dean, and reaches into the heart of the matter. The frustration comes because the opportunity to grasp that change appears to be slipping away.

But guess what? Dennis Kucinich wants that change, too.

People here ask why Kucinich is still in the race. Some say he stays in because of ego, others seem to think he is part of some larger conspiracy to sap strength from their chosen candidate. Still others just seem confused.

Here's the deal. Change in the Democratic Party will not come unless we demand it, and Dennis Kucinich is in this race to the end so as to make that demand. Kucinich put trade on the debate table where the other candidates did not. Kucinich puts the Iraq issue into a broader context than would have been on the debate table in his absence. Kucinich is crafting a national grassroots progressive movement with this race. Everywhere we go, we plant a seed that will germinate, to the woe of those who would rape our planet and undercut our workers and make war after war after war.

People ask why Dennis is in the race? DUers should demand that he stay in the race until Boston, and then DUers should join his national movement to push the Democratic Party into a new day, a better day for all of us. Frankly, there is no middle ground about that.

Think about this when you go to vote in your primary, or when you go to caucus, or when you hear the TV talking heads natter about electability and the need to narrow the field. There are broader causes afoot here. The country, and the Party, will still be here after November. Both will still need vast change, and will need a movement to advance that change, and will need a leader to organize that change.

That leader is Dennis Kucinich. Today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, that leader is Dennis Kucinich. I, for one, am profoundly grateful to know he is roaming in the gloaming and speaking the truth. I think, perhaps, you should be thankful, too.

William Rivers Pitt
Press Secretary
Dennis Kucinich for President

(This, by the way, is not an official campaign release. Just another DU post.)

the only way to CHANGE the party is through electing candidates who represent the change. We can continue along the same losing path of the last ten years, or we can clean house and let the liberals run the party for a while.

And I know that ego is most definitely NOT driving his campaign. Keeping his voice alive is beyond critical. He is a beacon and we need him to guide the party into harbor.

Dennis Kucinich represents the otherwise misplaced heart and soul of the Democratic party. He is the ONLY candidate with the courage to speak out for liberal, progressive values ala FDR from within the party hierarchy. Dennis Kucinich has my vote next Novemeber, whether he is still in the race or not. No one else even comes close to representing my interests in the GE.

Thank you for putting it so elequently!

8. "Roaming in the gloaming
and speaking the truth." That is a great line, Will.

I have felt so much better since I realized this. We do have power and it is growing and it will not stop. I feel comfort knowing Dennis and others like him are there. We are behind him and supporting him and will continue to do so. Kucinich and Dean have worked very hard at letting people know that this is our country. The low points come less often now and with each day I feel more strength and confidence. I remember this feeling, oh yes, during the Nixon years. I am glad it is back.

22. With the utmost respect to blm, funk, and the other Kerry supporters
whom I admire, I believe John Kerry has sold his soul to the Devil (well, the DLC, but it comes to the same thing in the end) for the chance to be President.

As Sam Smith pointed out recently, Kerry has been on the wrong side of every recent major vote. That's not a good record. Like a wastrel who inherits a fortune, he's depleted his capital and is now living on his reputation. The question is whether we'll have to find out the hard way that he's spiritually bankrupt.

19. That is the strategy we used in today's caucus
In my precinct, at this morning's caucus in WA, a woman and myself, both declared Kucinich supporters, began speaking aloud to each other about Kucinich and why he was our choice. This gave us an opportunity to articulate his history and stand on the issues. This pulled others into the discussion who admitted that they supported him too, but didn't believe he could win. Others acknowledged they hadn't known much about him. In the discussions of his stand on issues like health care, employment, peace, budget priorities, and education, those who had minimal knowledge of him were able to respond to their own support of his ideas. When we were actually tallying up votes for delegates, we moved someone to Kucinich for the importance of making his voice heard above the media whiteout of his candidacy. it was encouraging.

I agree the party needs fundamental changes. I agree there is work to do to recreate the party in the image of the VAST electorate it represents. I agree MUCH needs to be done to convince the working class that their vote is caounted and matters.

The only place I diverge with many is on the roadmap to get there.

29. For Dennis
Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 05:06 PM by realpolitik
We flinch when you tell the truth.
And why not, we hear lies
from those we must trust for our survival.
Our hearts are faint and we whisper in corners.

And the few who stand up
and speak their hearts too often die.
We do not accuse, but excuse.
When the great voices are stilled,
the rest of us, not poets,
cannot complete the sentence.

But if we whisper,
we are not dumb.
And where they want to lead us
we will not go.
We will not live in their America.

We remember the Arthur of our childhood,
and the promise.
That if we worked together,
we could remake the world
in the image of justice and freedom.

But the world had no mind to change,
like an alcoholic president.
Too much evil followed.
Some of us will pull the lever
this time, more the next.
Because we hear our whispered hopes
again spoken aloud,
and our unwhispered fears,
assuaged.

And most important,
we hear the voice of Camelot,
and it is not a distant echo.

Perhaps this should be an official campaign release. If I haven't taken the time to say so yet, I so appreciate your voice speaking out for Dennis. You ably communicate all of the bigger reasons why Dennis' supporters are as loyal, determined, and passionate about him. In doing so, you move the agenda further along the path. Our greatest need at this point, IMO, is to simply get the message to people. And I offer you my thanks in your efforts to do so.

31. Agreed! Kucinich is my first choice, Edwards-Dean, Kerry in that order.
But they all need to stay in to the end. It serves two purposes. It gives voice to the Dems who want to stick to old Dem principles and it keeps the opposition off balance. As soon as we are down to one candidate, they will be able to formulate a destruction strategy.

33. Got that today!!!
Went to my caucus in Washington state. I went as a Clark person but I was only one of two so Clark did not make the 15%. Had to do some quick thinking and soul searching for my next choice.

When it came down to it, the other candidates offered "strategic electability" but Kucinich offered the soul of the democratic party so he got my vote, which then gave him enough to get a delegate from the precinct.

On Clark though, I saw a person who, like myself, truly loves our Constitution and the Bill of Rights. He is someone who wants to save the soul of this country from the RW thieves of democracy.

Having attended several of these caucuses over the years, I have never felt so good about our wonderful slate of candidates as I have this year. I just love them all!!!

39. Doing what Nader did, but doing it right.
Reforming the party from within...no need to lie (as Nader did) and say Republicans and Dems are the same...I like it. DK is one of the good guys.

But enough is enough. The nomination process is for nominating a candidate. Debates are not bulletin boards to be used for free advertising. Past a certain point (who knows where that is?), staying in a race for any reason other than to obtain delegates for leverage or the nomination itself is an ethical wrong in my book. It doesn't serve the greater good if it defocuses the party from Bush removal.

Dennis' eyes see through the fear very clearly.

What's this about "free advertising"? Do you not see the price he is paying? We owe him bigtime!

I'm going to send this around to my Dean contacts. Just so they know that whatever happens, the battle isn't over, in fact it's just starting.

Great post, btw!

My favorite favorite part:

"Change in the Democratic Party will not come unless we demand it, and Dennis Kucinich is in this race to the end so as to make that demand."

Go DK! Go Dems! :D

52. I have ALWAYS argued that the change must come internally
DK is the change from within. He has made me proud to be a Democrat for the first time in many a moon. He posseses the conscience and soul of the party, and points with precision and conviction where it should go.

54. I came back to the party (and politics) because of DK
I left in 1993, after Clinton signed NAFTA. I was thoroughly disgusted with his willingness to sell out working people for corporate profits. This was after I'd been very active before, going to state conventions twice, organizing, volunteering, etc.

DK made me PROUD to be a Democrat again. He's the only one who's willing to talk about things like the bloated military, the "war on drugs", and a true single-payer universal health coverage plan. NOBODY else is addressing these issues the same way DK is.

56. DK ALL THE WAY!!!!!
I have to admit that I am overall disappointed in DK's performance. NOT because of anything he did but because of the shoddy coverage in the media. I hope he stays in the race for the long haul, I just donated to his campaign (again) realizing that he truly represents what I really want in the Democratic Party.

I have been on board with Dennis since the move to draft him to run. I was raised a Dem but went Independent. He inspired me home again...and inspired me to work for change.

All of us here that support Dennis are remaining together as a network in order to change the face of politics in this very conservative state. If Dennis isn't our nominee this time, we will be ready for him the next time around.

BTW...even if you can only send $1, if we all do it, he will have the money it takes to continue this fight for all of us. If you want the progressive vision he represents...put your money where your desires are and help him go all the way to Boston!!

DO IT NOW!!!

58. voting for Dennis is the first step to changing our country
I sure wish all the people who think Dennis is the best would vote for him and get others to as well. When the convention is over we can all join and vote for the Democratic nominee, but we must support Dennis now if we ever want to see a change. He is having a positive affect on the discussions in the debates. He is becoming better known. His views on the issues are being considered. The other candidiates notice the people's positive reactions to what Kucinich says. We must keep supporting Kucinich and vote for him in our primary. If we want change we must take the first step in that direction.

60. Kerry Opposed Ashcroft And Will Restore Posse Comitatus
The problem is that people want a progressive who sounds like Paul Wellstone on the stump. Kerry is not the podium-slamming type. Although he is one of the highest rated Senators in the history of Public Citizen, the LCV, Sierra Club, Green Scissors, etc., he sounds like a centrist. That is because he is building bridges, making progressive reform sound more palatable to the American people. Kerry has a longview vision of things, but also understands that you need to address the short term conditions to make them happen.

I'll give you an example of his methadology. With China, he knows that there is alot going on with economic shenanigans and human rights violations. But he also understands that isolating China completely with harsh sanctions disengages them and nothing is accomplished beyond natural acrimony. Kerry is willing to take things slow, and even take a step backwards in order to take three forward. He also advocates making such moves absolutely clear to the American public. He believes that it is vital that people understand why we would do such a thing, especially with foreign relations where there is not alot of public understanding.

Kerry may not seem like your typical progressive - and there are issues like single-payer health care that he genuinely disagrees with - but that is because he understands that real change comes when you make it seem like common sense, like the middle of the road, rather than scaring them with talk of radical change.

62. Rather Bitch Than Switch
Edited on Sun Feb-08-04 04:12 PM by Kanary
Finally we have the opportunity to actually make a clearcut difference and demand our party back. Immediately the fear rises to the surface, and the fading back to a line of (perceived) safety commences.

It's sooo much easier (and, I guess, more stimulating) to hang back and complain about how the party has let us down than to actually TAKE ACTION and reclaim the Democratic Party.

Keep reminding us, Will. All of us are in need of that calcium.

75. Sorry, WilliamPitt, but you're very very WRONG.
The grassroots revolution has worked for the right for one reason only: Christian fanaticism does not threaten Wall Street. It was a way to make capitalist policies more popular by getting people riled up over God.

The grassroots movement on the left will never EVER be successful. Why? Because the only reason the "Democratic Party" exists is to provide an alternative for Wall Street Companies when their rival companies are benefitting from Republicans while these are not. That's all it is.

I have an allegiance to certain individual LEFTIST Democrats like Kucinich and Gephardt, but the party doesn't mean jack shit to me. It's not affiliated with the Socialist International; it's still the bitch of Wall Street; it (i.e. Clinton/Gore) was just as responsible as Bush and Bush Jr. for the outsourcing of jobs and today's unemployment.

Here's where the change should be: Ban individual campaign contributions over, say, fifty bucks, ban lobbyists and PACs, and fund third parties. I'm sick of feeling like going back through a time warp into the dark ages whenever I return from a civilized country like France.

79. I'm afraid you have a valid point
You've said it very clearly.... both parties are beholden to the corporate world.

You're absolutely right that we definitely need a viable third party... the US is the only industrialized country that doesn't have a Socialist Party.

However, we still have to go from where we are...... at this point, it's the grassroots organization that has any chance. Somehow we're going to have to learn to come together and support each other in this, rather than splintering off over very small issues. I don't know if it's possible with our Rugged Individualist mentality.

Thanks for your input. Discouraging, but.......

Kanary

80. If only everyone voted for their wallets...
No first-world nation has such a fixation on "cultural" issues like America. If everyone voted for what profited them and actually researched each candidate's policies, we'd be living in Sweden. I personally don't support gay marriage, for instance, but there's no way in hell I'm going to vote based on that issue. Same thing goes for the Iraq War: There was an established, socialist-leaning candidate running for president (Gephardt) and he gets crucified over the issue of the war.
