Chris: But I do think -- we looked at polling. I just did it today. And in every state but missouri, the number one issue among voters, regular people, is iraq. They don't like this war. They want us out of there, wish we'd have never go, had never gone in the first place. Missouri, for some reason -- this makes sense -- health is the number one issue.& But everywhere else, they say it's iraq. And I think it's gonna hurt the republicans.
>> Jay: And how does rumsfeld keep his job? Like, I read that andy card --
Chris: Cheney. You want a short answer? And rumsfeld is --
Wanda: Have sort of, like, pictures on cheney or something?
Chris: Well, they go way back.
< Laughter > They go back -- they worked together under ford. They've been together forever.& You know, rumsfeld is one of these guys -- I think we know guys like this in show business, too. He wants all the power in the world, but he doesn't want any responsibility. So bob woodward said, "do you feel bad when you make a a mistake and soldiers die?" Now, most human beings would say, "yeah." Responsible for a soldier dying."
Wanda: Ooh.
Chris: And then he said, "well, you had --" he and he just, mentally -- this is the denial that woodward is talking about in this book. The president won't talk to anybody who said he's made a a mistake. He won't admit any mistakes, and in the end he and that's the problem we got with the president. The only solution in this is an election. People say, "what should we do?" In a year, next year. And by 2008, I think both parties ought to get together gone, nobody else is going to together because we're getting & out of there at the end of this president's term. We're getti out by then.
Jay: Right.
Chris: We'll give him another -- < Cheers and applause > Give him another year and half. But they got to understand that we're having an election in this country. And unless somebody stands forward -- if mccain does it, I'd hate to see it. But if somebody goes to run and says, "I want to keep 150,000 troops there after the next election," we'll vote against that guy.
Jay: Right.
Chris: But that's what you'd think. And I thi that we ought to look at -- solve -- everythese political problems can be solved with a a political answer. If you don't like this crowd that took us into war, vote against kick them out, throw them out. If you do like the way things & are going, vote for them. If you want this war to keep going for the nex1 o war. But if you don't, say no. It's in our hands. And I say, you got vote. And one thing about elections supreme court decided. 2004, it was so close. It was one state, ohio. As kerry said, it hadn't rained that day, he might have carried it is, every vote counts. And if you want this government to be in total control of bush, vote republican. If you want to have a little leash on the guy, vote the other way. It's up to you.
>> Jay: Chris matthews, there you go, in a nutshell. Chris
