Kerry begins day of Michigan campaigning with appearance at Detroit church

John Kerry rallied voters at a downtown Baptist church, an event that kicked off a daylong swing through Michigan, the biggest state so far in the Democratic presidential selection process.

Kerry, the front-runner, is hoping Saturday’s results will add to the momentum he has earned through back-to-back wins in Iowa and New Hampshire and victories in five of the seven states that voted on Tuesday.

Flanked by Michigan’s leading Democrats, including Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Kerry told supporters at the Second Ebenezer Baptist Church Friday morning that, if elected, he would continue what he called the unfinished tasks of the civil rights movement.

The U.S. senator from Massachusetts said the United States had “separate and unequal” health care and education systems and that racism persists. “We have an unfinished journey for civil rights in America and for fairness and for jobs,” Kerry said. “I intend to be a president who leads us on that march and helps to complete the promise to all Americans.”
