August 19 marked the 86th anniversary of women in this country FINALLY getting the right to vote, a battle that lasted 72 years (marked by the Seneca Falls Declaration of 1848) One might have thought that a country founded on democracy and all those wonderful ideals in the constitution might have gotten around to this a little sooner, or, at least, that the battle might not have been so intense.

For those of you who are unaware of the lengths women had to go to to get this basic right, I highly recommend "Iron-Jawed Angels" an hbo special about the women's suffrage movement in this country.

and, in honour of the amendment, and the upcoming women's equality day (26 August) here is a little quiz to test your knowledge of this part of the history of this country (answers below)

I am always astonished and dismayed that most people do not know that women have not had the right to vote for 100 years yet.

In the battle for equal status for women, it was a very big step. The Equal Rights Amendment wasn't adopted so that still needs to happen. In 2020, it'll be the centennial of women's right to vote. Surely, we can get an Equal Rights Amendment adopted before then.
