47 to 47 in Montana

Jon Tester

Jon Tester(D) is running for Senate against Conrad Burns(R).

They're tied 47 to 47 in a poll.

I recently donated to Jon Tester for this close race:

1. Good luck Jon Tester!
Burns will lose 20-or-so points, all by himself. The fallout from the firefighter harangue is not favoring the aptly-named Burns....

5. The firemen controversy for the Republican.

During the conference call, local reporters naturally used the opportunity to question (Conrad) Burns about the incident a week ago at the Billings, Mont., airport, when the Senator confronted a group of "hot-shot" firefighters and, well, basically told them they sucked. He told them to their face that they'd done "a poor job" fighting area fires.

And then, when a state official showed up to take an incident report, Burns, according to her report, pointed to a firefighter and said, "See that guy over there? He hasn't done a God-damned thing. They sit around. I saw it up on the Wedge fire and in northwestern Montana some years ago. It's wasteful. You probably paid that guy $10,000 to sit around. It's gotta change."

15. Burns should be taken seriously
If Burns says you haven't done a God damned thing, you'd better listen. After all, he's an expert on the subject.

10. Burns lashing out at firefigters
after they attempted to put out forest fires (at least I think that was the situation.) The reportage really put Burns in a bad light.

8. Right, this is the only one Tester doesn't lead
Burns has a ton of money and he's been painting Tester as too liberal for the state. Other than Burns, almost every major elected official in Montana is a Democrat, despite the big red edge in the presidential vote, but those Democrats are moderates.

I still think Tester has the advantage. Once he goes back on the air with commercials the polls should edge in his favor.

But none of these races will be easy. Santorum will close the gap as will DeWine. You don't flick aside senatorial incumbents without a sweat.

Helping Jon Tester to get back "on the air with commercials."

21. Was the poll done before or after the "firefighter" comments became
news? That might make a difference. I went to high school and college in Missoula and have been following Tester. I really like him. Montana needs this guy.

That firefighter thing happened awhile ago. Whether or not that's getting wide play in Montana is something I can't say.

Jon Tester Live from the Farm near Big Sandy, MT
by Jon Tester
Tue Aug 15, 2006 at 05:11:20 PM PDT

Between harvest on the farm and a U.S. Senate race, I don't get to spend too much time at the computer, but I'll be here for awhile to talk about the issues and our campaign.

I've been all over Montana recently and people have been talking to me about the high cost of energy, fiscal responsibility, honesty in government, and health care.

We've made some real changes on these issues here in Montana, now it's time to bring that kind of change to Washington.

I'm sure that 18 years ago, Senator Burns went to Washington with the best of intentions, but he has not changed Washington, in fact, it has changed him.

I look forward to the discussion over the internet - keep in mind I've only got 70% efficiency on the keyboard.

after the firefighter thing. Has he been putting on an ad blitz? Seems like repukes have the momentum in all these Senate polls.

Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 09:02 PM by Awsi Dooger
I think the Democratic challengers have been saving their money and not spending on TV during the slow vacation months, allowing the GOP incumbents to creep up in the polls. Not really much you can do about that. Notice it's worked in our favor in a few cases where we are the incumbent and have been advertising late this summer, notably the Michigan gov race with Granholm catching up.
