The latest Republican NEWSPEAK word??
I DVR'd yesterday's Tweetie show and was amazed (not) that it seems the civil war in Iraq was described as 'gangland-style' fighting. I wonder how often we will hear 'gangland' in the Republican lexicon now?

1. Probably will be used often, or at least something like it...
the term makes it sound as if those who are fighting are criminals, and thus makes it seem as if the country is simply lawless, rather than in the midst of a civil war.

2. Absolutely - it is out of the realm of political ideology and not
something that a 'modern' army could possibly prepare for. This does raise the question, then, of the stability of the 'American-Iraqi' government and the Bush Administration claims of bringing civility to the Iraqi people. No matter how they phrase it - they are boxing themselves into a corner.

3. There is an article on the net someplace about Rove's fairytales
drawing on themes that appeal to the American psyche. This is the Elliot Ness fairy tale theme...as opposed to the cowboy and Injun theme they usually use.

12. which plays right into one of my own personal talking points.
They got it wrong the moment they declared a War on Terror as a military exercise against nation states. While it may be true that some nation states support some specific form of terrorism, most do not. Most terrorism is (or at any rate used to be before Bush popularized and publicized the tactic)insurgencies and uprisings within a specific country against the powers that be, like the Basque separatists or the Chechen's or whomever. When it did go outside, it was more hit and run annoyances, like the Achilles Lauri.(and no, I am not downplaying the importance of ANY death in any terrorist incident or even the overall general importance of any incident)It used to be their (the terrorists) DESIRE to be seen as armies, hence their always grandiloquent names, many of which utilized the word "ARMY". When Bush declared this a military issue, he actually ELEVATED these groups from their former status as criminals, hoodlums or gangsters. He is personally responsible in my opinion for being their major recruiter. Osama who used to be analogous to a Sacco or Vanzetti, (admittedly more powerful damage-wise because he has more powerful instruments at his disposal) is now more analogous to a Simon Bolivar. It's much better to denigrate them as criminals and subject them to civil penalities even though that would involve (gasp!) courts and justice.

The Republicans even made a talking point about this which the Dems were completely ineffective in countering. Remember when they sneered "John Kerry would ARREST Osama".

7. "Sectarian violence" is another one. An attempt to minimize the
huge, glaring problem by making it sound like it's just a few little skirmishes between mere disagreeing sects.

Seems like a lot more than that, to me.

8. I'll take "gang-land" over "get it" any day of the week.

I SO hate hearing these mouth-breathers say shit like "Liberals just don't get it." I don't think they even know what it is. So, I assume they're saying "herpes as a result of frequent sexual intercourse with a sibling." So, the next time you hear Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck pander to these good "salt of the earth" folk by saying they "get it," just imagine that they get it often, and giggle.
