Levin, Stabenow endorsing Kerry
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Michigan Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow endorsed fellow Democratic Sen. John Kerry for president Thursday, a spokesman for Stabenow said.

Levin and Stabenow scheduled a joint announcement for Thursday afternoon.

Levin said earlier this week he was deciding between front-runner John Kerry and Wesley Clark because he believes the Democratic candidate must have military experience.

Levin and Stabenow also said the results of Tuesday's primaries and caucuses would factor in their decisions. Kerry won five of seven states on Tuesday.

4. They want to get on to Kerry's committees when Kerry loses but is still
the senior democrat on the powerful committees.

Stabenow dissappoints me. She came from the same place Edwards did and fights for the same people. If Edwards were a three-term senator with seniority on powerful committees, I wonder if she would have changed her mind.

5. We're fortunate in Michigan to have two fine senators
Not because of this endorsement, but because they are on the front line every day. Lived in Maryland a lot over the past couple of years, too. Sarbanes did nice work with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, but geez, where is Barbara Mikulski? Talk about a nonentity. From what I have seen, I hope this is her last term.

13. Not a candidate? I thought that's what Kerry was about, electability?
We're not electing the guy for what he'll do is president at all. That's what Dean is about, being a great president.

Send them a president, not a candidate.

19. "Don't just send them a message, send them a president" A Kerry TM.
Surely you've heard it during the campaign.

14. Nice to have two fine senators from my state
Edited on Fri Feb-06-04 12:29 AM by fujiyama
BTW, both voted AGAINST the war...So I give them a lot of credit.

I do wish they were a bit tougher on the auto industry though. I think Levin opposed higher fuel standards.

Oh well, they're still pretty good.

16. that's one of kerry's big things
supporting tougher fuel standards. and just getting off oil dependence. so hopefully these endorsements will help him in this state. i do hope people learn to see getting off oil does not mean a loss of jobs. it in fact means more jobs for the new inventions including cars that depend on alternative sources of energy.

17. MI senators being tough on the auto industry is a pipe dream
It'd be tantamount to political suicide. I'm a born and raised (recently moved) Michigander and the blue collar union auto plant worker is one of the Democrat's strongest allies there. I'd like to see them toughen up on it too, but at the same time I understand why they wouldn't want to risk alienating a large part of their base.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit disappointed, but congrats to the Kerry supporters nonetheless.
