Bill Moyers for President...?
I may be late on this one...but here is a potential plan for the Dems.

Molly Ivins suggests that we support Bill Moyers for President. Hmmmm....

I like Molly Ivins. Sometimes she is a bit "green" for me, but she proves that the Shrub really ISN'T from Texas...she has more knowledge and brainpower in her little finger than our Shrubmeister.

Check it out...How would the strategy work for the Dems?

1. Bill Moyers is a god
I like the idea from Ivins, but more than that I want to say I enjoy Bill Moyers more with every word he speaks. It's so uncommon to find a person who is so pitch-perfect in everything they say...but then along comes Mr. Moyers.

2. It would be a disaster.
Moyers is a great guy. He is correct on most issues. In normal times, Moyers might have a shot. But, Moyers is too nice to beat the Repugs. He's too intellectual. I know those are actually good traits, but with the sheeple, they don't sell. They want macho (they'll even take imaginary macho as in Bush) over intellect.

The sheeple don't want people who ponder both sides of issues and understand the gray area in the middle. They want a deciderer, even if the deciderer is an imbecile (like Bush).

The Democrats need a real fighter, someone who will take the fight to the Repugs instead of being defined by them. Moyers wouldn't be that guy.

5. Read Ms Ivins on the matter. Point would be to raise level of debate
and get viable DEM candidates to actually talk substance instead of taking GOP bait on wedge issues.

It's not a bad idea. Americans hunger to hear some suggestions for turning things around. The GOP wants to frame the debate along straw man issues because they don't have any solutions and sure as hell can't run on the recent record.

I wrote Mr. Moyers, as per Ms. Ivins' suggestion.

Read the article. It isn't about him being in the campaign to the finish. It's about talking substance and showing DEMS ARE moral people

And, about Moyers not being a fighter... have you seen him the past couple years? He has been taking it to the real powers in pretty blunt terms. Watch FSTV when they roll video of some of his recent addresses.

3. You Know, with the Disappointing Performance by Democrats Lately,
If Gore doesn't run I could almost get behind Moyers. I'm tired of making excuses for Democrats on Capitol Hill. Moyers does have a presence, an integrity, and bipartisan respect. In other elections, his bookish style might be the kiss of death, but in 2008 he could be the Jimmy Carter to follow the latest scandal-ridden Republican presidency.

6. it's a great idea . . . he won't win, but he'd sure as hell elevate . . .
Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 10:28 AM by OneBlueSky
the level of debate . . . instead of arguing about flag burning and gay marriage, candidates would be forced to discuss real issues (or look like the fools most of them are) . . .

7. This is definitely worth considering.....
Bill Moyers would definitely force the level of discourse far beyond slogans and sound bites. Being honest, passionate, intelligent and articulate; he's also about as far removed from the current miserable state of leadership as one could imagine.

Bill Moyers and Molly Ivins are both Texans and hip-deep in the muck fighting the good fight. Also, the progressive insurgency here just might be starting to get through to their friends and neighbors. Don't give up on Texas....

8. Sounds a bit like Jimmy Carter II
Nice guy, probably couldn't survive the wars.

The problem is not that Dems don't elevate the debate; they TRY to. The MSM won't let them. It's much easier to just parrot the latest Rep sound bite swift boat attack.

The problem the past few elections is that Dems have been trying to run on issues, and Reps have been running on personalities, and the shallow electorate has bought into it.

I love Bill Moyers. There may not be a more thoughtful, spiritual person out there in public discourse, but I think he would be a disaster in an election cycle.
