Sanders OK'd petition to be on Democratic ballot

Published: Tuesday, July 18, 2006
MONTPELIER -- It was the Democratic Party that drew up the petition
to put Bernie Sanders' name on the party's primary ballot, collected
names on the petition and filed it with the Secretary of State's Office.

It was Bernie Sanders himself, however, who signed his name consenting
to have the petition filed.

Sanders, the longtime independent who is running for U.S. Senate, intends
to decline the party's nomination if he wins the Sept. 12 primary, campaign
manager Jeff Weaver said. He appreciates the Democratic Party's support
but prefers to run as an independent, Weaver said. Primary winners have
until Sept. 15 to decline nominations.

Voters who select a Democratic ballot at the primary will be choosing from
among Sanders, Larry Drown, Craig Hill, Peter Moss and Louis Thabault
for U.S. Senate. If Sanders wins the primary, the party will have prevented
any of the others, who lack party officials' support, from running on the
Democratic line in November even if Sanders declines the nomination. In that
case, the party could choose another candidate in caucus or choose to have
no candidate.
