Rivals Stake Claim to Tenn
Clark, Edwards Jockey for Leverage in Race Against Kerry

Sen. John Edwards (N.C.) and retired Army Gen. Wesley K. Clark raced each other Wednesday for starting position in the Tennessee primary, as they vied for the right to take on John F. Kerry in the finals of the Democratic presidential race.

With front-runner Kerry back in Boston for a rare day's respite from the campaign trail and Howard Dean on a cross-country journey from Washington to the midwestern battlegrounds of Michigan and Wisconsin, the two southern-based candidates, each with one win under his belt, said they would make Tuesday's Tennessee contest the next major test of this elimination contest.

Edwards, pumped up by his 15-point victory Tuesday over Kerry in South Carolina but still fighting the bronchitis that has left him with a fragment of his voice, told reporters here that the nomination fight "looks like it's narrowed down to two or maybe three candidates." He said, "I think that if it's two, it's myself and Senator Kerry, and I'll let General Clark argue whether he should be in that group."

The former NATO commander was more than ready to make that argument. Arriving here early in the day, after four hours of sleep, he jumped on the counter at a diner and told startled breakfast customers, "We won Oklahoma, and we are on the move."...
