Edwards: "Who was (Yitzhak Rabin)?"
From Doug Ireland:

<Edwards is certainly clever, but his knowledge base is awfully thin - only Al Sharpton's is thinner. In the last New Hampshire debate, he didn't know what the Defense of Marriage Act really said - despite the fact that the GOP is making gay marriage a hot button social issue in '04.

<He's startlingly callow to go up against Dubya, no matter how good a debater he is. In the June 2003 Washington Monthly, its iconoclastic editor Charlie Peters reported the following anecdote: One evening, when he was campaigning for the Senate in North Carolina, Edwards was faced with a choice of several events he might attend. An advance man suggested, 'Maybe we ought to go to a reception for Leah Rabin.' 'Who's she?' 'Yitzhak Rabin's widow,' replied the aide. 'Who was he?' asked Edwards.

21. pretty... pretty much wrong.

The Edwards campaign says that Peters' anonymously sourced story "has no bearing in fact" and that Edwards has never been to an event that included Leah Rabin.

4. An obvious lack of curiosity about the world

is not a trait that should characterize the Democratic nominee at this point in American history.

3. That article is amazing
I thought the Rabin quote was a joke, but apparently true.

Very interesting info on Sen Edwards votes in the Senate & ties to special interests.

But the biggest hypocrisy is the lies about his poor background.

5. I thought Edwards was bad because he was inexperienced
Turns out he is bad because of his conservative past as well

6. Whoa
What a hollow suit case story... This really would be a major disappointment for me in Edwards capability to lead the world's most complex and powerful government, if that's an accurate story.

I thought Edwards had a better head for what goes on in the world, than to ignore the name of the assassinated Israeli Prime Minister.

Sounds like Bush and what he asked, according to German weekly Der Spiegel, to former Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso: "Are there Blacks in Brazil, too?" (English translation of that PayPerView article is here)

7. Is anyone else here just appalled at the thought
of either Kerry or Edwards being our nominee?

It's stuff like this that makes me so incredibly sad. We have a gift in Wes Clark and yet this party is letting him slip right through their fingers.

30. If you compare the story with the response you'll see that
the response isn't a response. The anecdote is about choosing an event, one of the possibilities being one involving Leah Rabin. The response says that he's never been to one involving Leah Rabin. Which implies only, in the context of the anecdote, that he chose one of the other events to attend.

So his rebuttal would have to be that the anecdote itself is a fabrication, not that he never attended an event involving Leah Rabin.

15. That is a meaty hit piece if ever I saw one.
Kind of curious to see how much of it stands up under scrutiny. I had thought Edwards' only real weaknesses were a lack of experience and his background as a trial lawyer, but it looks as if there's a little more to it than that.

I wonder if the Edwards people will have anything meaningful to say in response, or if they'll just launch another dozen or so anti-Clark threads.

And they are pretty desperate attempts at smearing, from what I have seen.

Even I know who Rabin is (or was), and I know very little.

Does the fact that Edwards is a Southern Southerner from the South make up for this?

26. Wow. Just amazing
I've grown accustomed to him trying to pretend he is in a two man race, to his adament support for IRW, to his Patriot Act vote. I feel like I have grown calluses to those (but not to him not knowing what DoMA said--he is a lawyer after all, and it IS the law of the land), but not to know who Rabin is...well...it's beyond belief.

27. Edwards does not have great grasp of foreign affairs. That is a fact.

Probably a lot better than Bush has even now, but that is a
very low bar.
