To those people who have had enough with corrupt corporations.
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 12:45 AM by liberaldemocrat7
I agree with Green party members that corporations exert too much influence on legislation in this country. They buy the services of regressive Republicans and Democrats in congress.

Would you join a movement to expose those companies who exert too much influence and then begin to organize a large movement to boycott them and then make progressive demands of these corporations?

Why not go to the source and punish these companies and make them go to the congress to get progressive legislation that we want passed or lose alot of money?

If you will join, place a Y in your subject line and nothing else.

If you will not join, place an N in your subject line and nothing else.

Then write your more extensive reply in the body of the message. Thank you.

But since that opinion is in agreement with most Dems, why doesn't th Green Party join the Dems on this issue?

2. Many Greens are ex-Dems who grew tired of competing with corporations
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 12:59 AM by Selatius
There are several Democrats who were helped into power with campaign cash from several corporations from big credit card industry giants to big banking/finance interests. Joe Biden is just one example.

This isn't proportional representation. This is single-seat district representation we run on. As a result, you are limited to just two parties. In such a situation, the only avenue left is the primary system, but the whole system appears to be skewed towards those who have the most money. Statistically speaking, the more money you have, the greater your chances of victory. You can be a "poor person's candidate" and win, but those victories are few compared to those who are supported by wealthy interests.

3. I understand that. M only problem with alternative Parties is that they
CAN'T WIN!

Over the years, the 2 major parties have designed a system that makes it IMPOSSIBLE for any other candidate to win anything more than a Senator or Representative, and even to do THAT is really pushing the odds...a lot!

All I meant was that on the issues they agree on, it seems to be a good idea to join forces with one of the major parties who WILL win and just maybe put that issue into law.

6. Yes, a coalition can be formed, but that takes open negotiation
Our system does not encourage parties to negotiate with each other like in proportional representation. There is nothing preventing the opening of direct dialogue between the leadership of the Democratic Party with the leadership of the Green Party and striking a deal of some kind, but I don't think negotiating with the Greens is on the list of Harry Reid's or Barbara Boxer's to-do list.

7. Apparently not many people appear annoyed at too much corporate influence
here.

4. you must be joking-- how many dem leaders have expressed real...
...disdain for corporate influence in government and politics? Far fewer than the number that belly up to the trough at every opportunity, IMO. Democrats have had ample opportunities to reform corporate power and influence, but like the republicans, they make token attempts only when events lift the rocks and let some sun light expose the slimy stuff that resides under there.

Most issues of real importance to me can be traced to corporate greed, either directly as causitive agents or indirectly as benefitting participants. I recognize that this is human nature and that corporations simply express it-- the term "incorporate" means to make like a physical being, i.e. a human-- but that doesn't make it right.

8. I don't see it as that simple.
I already boycott large banks, and keep my money in a local credit union, but my paycheck is drawn on a big bank. I try and boycott gas stations, but I have to use some every now and again. I can't get all my food from local farms because I live in the northeast. At least I keep my patronage of large restaraunt chains to a minimum.

That said, yes, let's try.

9. Ok those interested in taking power do this.
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 08:39 AM by liberaldemocrat7
1. Get as many people as you can to do point number 2. Flood these companies with these list of
demands. Don't waste time asking the congressmen and senators, ask those who give them money
because it appears people such as you who give them money through your purchases so you might
as well set these conditions for purchasing products. The more people who send this the bigger
the union we create.

2. Send this list of demands to the companies I list below through the links I provide.

A progressive agenda for America.

I demand that the Republican Party hold a press
conference and accede to these demands. Until such a
press conference happens and the legislation and/or
actions gets passed I will boycott products from
Republican contributors Dell Computers, Walmart,
Wendy's, Outback Steak House, Dominos Pizza,
Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Eckerd, CVS and Walgreens,
Curves for women health clubs, General Electric and
Exxon/Mobil.

I demand that congress pass legislation ending the war in
Iraq and withdraw the troops and arrange with the
United Nations to replace US troops with UN troops to
defend Iraq until The Iraqi army can defend Iraq.

I demand that the Republican party end their aggressive and
hateful action to end a woman's right to choose
abortion or not.

I demand that the Republican party end their aggressive and
hateful action to harrass immigrants to this country.

I demand that the Congress of the United states and the
president of the United States enact a law to increase
the minimum wage to TEN dollars an hour and also to
extend unemployment benefits to a year or more for all
people whose unemployment benefits expired after 6
months even though they still seek work.

I demand that the Congress of the United States to not
privatize social security benefits in any form
including taking a percentage of the social security tax
and placing it in private accounts. People can
already create their own pensions with money after
taxes in the private sector.

I demand that the congress make all of a person's earned
income taxable for social security FICA tax purposes
and remove the 88,000 dollar taxable income limit. This
will make social security solvent for many years to
come.

I demand the congress increase the payroll tax in order to
make social security solvent as well.

I demand congress and the president enact a prescription
drug benefit under Medicare Part B which covers 80
percent of medication cost, with no extra premium, no
extra deductibles, no means test and no coverage gaps,
and no penalties for signing up in a succeeding year.

I demand congress repeal the faulty Medicare law HR 1 / S 1
passed by congress in Nov 2003.

I demand congress enact single payer universal health
insurance for every citizen as minimum coverage.

I demand that congress and the president enact universal
vote by mail throughout the 50 states of the United
States of America with paper ballots easy to fill out
and difficult to change or invalidate by Republican
Party officials. This will prevent Republicans from
vote suppression by skin color and political party
which happened electronically and in person in the 2000
and 2004 elections.

I demand that congress and the president enact that civil
servants on every state payroll keep track of voter
registrations and vote counting of mail in votes in
each precinct and not companies such as Choicepoint. We
need to take the Republican Party out of the business
of keeping track of voter registration and counting
votes.

I demand that congress and the president ban the secretary
of state in each of the 50 states from engaging in
politics especially acting as a campaign official for a
presidential campaign.

I demand congress enact legislation protecting private
pensions from corporations deliberately declaring
bankruptcy or ending pensions outright.

You also pledge to boycott travel to South Dakota and Louisiana and their products as best as you can unless you reside in these states and will call or send email to the governor of Louisiana and South Dakota and tell them that unless they get their legislatures to repeal the abortion bans fully, you will not do business with them any more and that you will not do business with antiabortion and Republican Party supporting companies Dominos Pizza and Curves for women health clubs.

Ignore their text about the former CEO. The current Dominos Pizza CEO David Brandon also opposes raising the minimum wage and on that issue alone should give you reason to boycott Dominos Pizza. >
