NJ-Senate Debate... I heard Menedez smoked Kean. Anyone catch it?
By the way, it re-airs tonight on CSPAN at 7pm.

Id love to hear some commentary from some DU'ers, though.

1. I watched it. Menendez was great. Very seasoned and mature. Kean
came across as just not ready. He was petulant at times and unsure at others.

29. Absolutely ... It was like the Virginia Governors ...
debate ... Kilgore just kept going back to trying to slander Kaine ... The moderators asked for a commitment to not go negative in the campaign, and it was all Kilgore had ... Same as this Kean dude ... Reminded me of a younger Santorum ...

These guys are just flat nuts ...

6. Caught the end of it...
...while surfing this morning. Kean certainly seemed unsure of himself...stumbling and not clear.

Don't think any independent would vote for him oveer Menendez.

8. I think so. I think that even if people were predisposed to like
Kean, they would have to observe that he just isn't ready. Menendez out-shone him in every way. Menendez is a very good debater. He did us very proud today.

12. Im watching now and Kean is god-awful.
He can barely get through a sentence without stuttering or tripping over his own words. Its also quite obvious that he has no grasp of national issues.

For some reason, C-SPAN has "D-NJ" under Kean's name, an error, obviously, but still.

Why in the blazes they asked them both "Would Hillary Clinton make a good president?" I'll never know.

Kean looks like a smug prep school spoiled little brat (he also slurs his words and sort of spits his words out, instead of letting them flow out).

31. Well Tom Kean is just riding off his daddy's coattails
His father was a popular moderate Republican governor in the 80's so I'm guessing Jr. is trying for that name recognition vote. He's a name only, no substance...I don't think Menendez will have much trouble beating him in November

14. Thanks for posting this - I'm watching now and agree 100% with you
Menedez is doing a beautiful job. Kean seems like the newest "Dan Quayle".

I absolutely can't believe his idiotic comment that people should look at Westfield to see how good he is and that Mendendez won't say look at Hudson county. This is SOOO tacky. (For non- NJ, Wesfield is a very pretty affluent town; Hudson county is a diverse urban area, with cities like has Newark and Jersey City.)

16. Menendez fired back though and said something like...
Edited on Sun Jun-25-06 06:49 PM by nickshepDEM
"Im proud of the people of Hudson County. They're hardworking, blue collard Americans. And I invite anyone to visit the people of Hudson County."

Kean sorta' trashed Hudson County by saying 'Look where I come from and look where you come from'. It was quite obvious he was pointing out that his district is much 'nicer'. What POS.

18. You have a great memory
Kean's comment is a gaffe - The Kean family is part of the NJ upper class. That comment can be used to show that he thinks he earned his status in life - which he did mostly by picking the right parents. His dad speaks with the NJ upper class diction that sounded to me (a midwest transplant) as either talking with marbles in his mouth or a speech impediment, but he seemed a nice guy. This guy sounds here like a snob, who likely thinks he's better than the rest of the state's residents.

17. "When we're talking about minimum wage, we're talking about jobs...
and we need policies and tax policies that create jobs." —Tom Kean Jr.

Rough transcript of his response about whether or not we should raise the minimum wage.

My reaction: What?

21. Kean made one real big mistake. Swiftboated the wrong Democrat.
If you're going to smear your opponent make sure it's not about something that he can blow your ass away on using multiple federal prosecutors as ammunition.

Kean's been smearing Menendez regarding his relationship with the former (crooked) mayor of Jersey City.

Menendez fired back, quoting several Federal prosecuters who praised Menendez for his anticorruption efforts. It didn't hurt that both the New York Times and the Newark Star Ledger both ran editorials attacking Kean for trying to smear Menendez.

Kean came of as an amateur rich boy wannabe. Menendez was tough and focused and when he pounded Kean on his swiftboating tactics, Kean looked like someone whacked him with a two by four.

24. I was thinking the exact same thing
Menendez destroyed Kean on the attacks on his character and he destroyed him ont the issues. My favorite was when he said, "What you are hearing is that Mr. Kean doesn't have a position on immigration." Every elected Democrat needs to watch that debate and take a lead from Senator Menendez. Clearly he won't take any shit from Republicans.

25. Wow! ..I wound up catching this debate around 2 a.m. on Cspan...
That Kean dude was weak, shakey, and seemed completely LOST when he responding to questions from the moderator, or from responses from Menendez.

Most of his responses were.. Uh.. Ummm..

Mendezez on the other hand, was as cool as the center seed of a refrigerated cucumber!

You were right Nick. Not only did he smoke Kean, he royally kicked his ass!

26. US learned in 2000 + 2004--it doesn't matter who you think won
It only matters how the pundits spin it. I get the impression that the only spins that are really working are the national ones and in CA.

27. Actually not true
In fact the first comment made after the first Kerry/Bush date at a gathering of Democrats was "Wow, there's no way they can spin this - right? (said tenatively). Kerry was SO clearly superior to Bush that it couldn't and wasn't spun as otherwise. (The Republicans even took the tack of admitting Kerry was the better debater and implying that wasn't important.
