My run-in with a Fundy today (Update)

This morning my wife and I had to run my daughter down to the southern part of the state for her first summer camp. On the way back I happened to notice a sign on the road that said "New Adult Superstore - Next Exit." So I asked the wife if she wanted to stop and see what they had and she said sure, she's an adventurous gal, so I pulled off the exit.

When we got across the interstate their was a group of guys setup in front of the entrance of the store with cameras and were taking pictures of people entering and leaving the place. The had big signs setup saying that truck drivers pictures would be taken and that their company would be notified that they had stopped here. I said to myself that I don't care what these red-necks are doing but it seriously aggravated my wife as we passed through their line and went into the store.

But the more I thought about it the more it aggravated me and of course that was what everyone in the store was talking about. The clerk said they didn't want the store to be their and they, the owners, had put up the wood fence yesterday but these yahoos were climbing up on ladders to take pictures of people.

As we left the store one of them had a camera pointed at us and it dawned on me what they were actually doing, so I thought I would have a chat with them on the way out. When I got to the entrance I rolled my window down and one of them had a movie camera on me so I said to him, "Hey, how you all doing today." He said, "Great," so I asked him, "Don't you boys have jobs or family's or something that you should be taking care of today," and he replies, "that's what he is doing, taking care of his family." "How are you taking care of your family being out here," I asked. He says, " Did I know that rape and child molestation goes up 40% in locations where porn stores go into?" I told him that those figures are B.S. He says," Oh, yeah, that's what the police reports say and he should know because he works for the victims advocates department or something" I reply, "I don't care whose figures they are they are B.S. and people have been trying to sell that BS for over 40 years with no success."

I then went on to tell he that," what you guys are doing out here is trying to intimidated people to get your way, and that my friend is un-American." I hit the power window and drove off. I could hear him shouting my license plate number to one of the other guys, like that was going to bother me or something, and thought to myself how pathetic.

But as I thought about it while I was driving away, that is what fundies are about, intimidating people to get their way and there comes a time, when reason has failed, that we have to get up in their face and let them know that isn't going to work. It is no different than dealing with the schoolyard bully. Unfortunately, we are getting to a point in this country that we all are going to have to be willing to stand up to them and be willing to do whatever it takes to stop the spread of their cancer in this country and let them know we will not be intimidated out of our freedoms.

Having had some time to look into these people I have found out a little more about them.

1. They were founded and are run by a guy who has been convicted and is on probation for Armed robbery, Sodomy, and Murder. I guess this is the kind of leader the religious right thinks should be teaching us all about moral values, as obviously their knowledge is superior to ours.

2. They operate out of Louisville KY. and have a web site at http://war-line.com/ where they post the pictures of the people they have accosted. However. they have still not posted my picture. Perhaps I didn't make enough of a lasting impression on them and should go back to visit again.

1. Good job. I'd go back and discuss with them the info that you found.

You never know, they might not know that their founder is himself a criminal and a sodomite. At the very least, that should make their heads spin.

2. I don't know how they could not know since there was an article

in the local Louisville paper. However, I currently thinking about working on a plan that gets them a little "air time" here in Indy, if you know what I mean.

3. You'd be surprised how naive some of these followers can be. Maybe a few

flyers to leave at the store with this information, just in case any of the other patrons might not be aware. Kinda hard to get all worked up about getting slimed by a follower of a convicted criminal. Any other groups you can get an assist from in the area? This intimidation crap has to be stamped out, good on you for taking up the torch.

4. I don't know. I maybe would like to find a few other DU'ers that

maybe would could form a group to go down there, southern Indiana. and do a small documentary and ask these people some questions. What do you think?

6. The thing to do is take printed copies of those articles and distribute

them among the group who is taking pictures of patrons of the store.
Those who are associating with this individual should know what their leader is. They shouldn't be bothered by any invasion of privacy or anything. They are already doing that to others.

They drag down a neighborhood quickly. Prostitutes hang out in front of them, they have lurid window displays and they are crime magnets.
The tittie bars on 8 Mile are bad enough without adult bookstores.

I personally don't have a problem with the people taking pictures of the curstomers. I think their wives should know they are perverts. An adult in this country has the right to buy and look at that crap, but they don't have the right to privacy in a public parking lot.

When I lived in Detroit, my neighborhood organization and some of the local churches banded together to picket outside of some of the adult theaters/bookstores on Woodward in Highland Park. They recently got one of them shut down!

You have a mighty expansive definition of perversion, there.

I used to work for a chain of indie video stores that carried (along with regular titles) a decent sized adult collection. Believe me, all kinds of productive members of the community, happily married husbands AND wives, healthy people across the board were occasional or regular customers of erotica, smut, or "that crap" as you put it.

But it must be nice to be so holy, pure and righteous that you have the time to try to run everybody else's life for them.

(Hey, were any of those "local churches" you protested with Catholic, by any chance? Because, really, if you want to talk about "sick perversion", I think the Vatican could teach us all a few things!)

20. How about legal action?

Hate to suggest stifling free speech, but it sure sounds like what these people have done violates most of the rules which apply to journalists in terms of libel and slander. These people walking into the store aren't likely "public figures" or so defined by courts, they are having their pictures taken without consent, published online with the implication (pretty explicitly) that they are doing something that might get them fired or might cause them to "suffer injury to their reputation" in a public fashion. Sounds like a smart attorney needs to get up in the faces of these folks with the cameras and let them know they risk legal action by following their present course of behavior -- nothing necessarily wrong with having your picture taken in a public parking lot, but the entire "they're perverts and we're telling their wives (and bosses and everyone else) what they've done" seems like it wouldn't wash in court. Somehow, even if my legal reasoning is suspect, I'd bet a letter from a attorney or a visit by someone like that would cool this groups jets pretty quickly -- I don't imagine they want to get into a legal fight with the individuals involved.
