Mainstream media: conservative or just bandwagon jumpers?
Since Shrub's approval ratings dipped below the magic 50% the same media that worshipped him for three years is now being critical of him. Will the media say anything to sell newspapers and increase ratings or is this an aberration?

1. Well.. they definitly want to sell the news
After all, money is what talks in this country. I doubt anyone will accuse Faux of being bandwagon jumpers, they're going to spin conservative no matter what shrub's numbers are. Also realize that it's a long time until the election. I seem to remember a month ago Dean was the unbeatable Democrat and Bush was the teflon man.

If you want to get tinfoil hat for a second one could say they're getting it out of thier system now, so that they look more balanced kissing shrub's butt closer to the election. :tinfoilhat:

Personally I think they're like other corporations, they give to both sides so that they win no matter who is in office. (except maybe Faux)

2. I vote bandwagon...
the media are there to make money. If it sells commercials and print ads, they're all over it. I don't think we need to attach any other motive to their actions.

If the country swung to the far left tomorrow, I guarantee Fox would become a liberal station.

3. Newspapers are in business. If the story sells they will use it
You can be sure that the bottom lines will come into it. So you can be sure if the whole country turned blue map the papers would still be on the purple side going in to red. Most papers are big business and they need to make money. I believe ads make the money in a big percent then sales of papers to readers.

4. They are Corporatist...

which is inherently conservative..

Whether it attacks a Dem or Repub, is only a reflection of the candidate that they are attacking not embodying the safe status quo that keeps them in business.

5. They are just on a bit of a break at the moment
Right now they are concentrating on trying as hard as they can to make sure wes clark is not the democratic nominee. When the general election comes, they will do everyting in their power (and that's a lot of power)to make sure dumbya remains in office. Things are pretty calm at the moment, with Kerry in the lead and Edwards as the back-up. Although I think they would rather have Dean than Edwards, as long as Clark is kept down, things are going mostly according to plan from the right-wing gop corporate media perspective. Good enough, they think. (They hope!) They're running a little scared, but they're not that scared. The Bush machine is mostly revved down right now. It will start back up in the general election. The media will take their marching orders directly from the gop script. We will have to fight hard to frame things our way. Get ready for a hellish political fight.
