T Lott: "If you're 60 and liberal, there's something wrong with your mind"
On Hairballz, Trent sez: "If you're young and conservative, there's something wrong with your heart. If your 60 and liberal, there's something wrong with your mind."

Whaaaaaaa?

If that's true, then we need to get rid of every ossified old fart in office.

And, at 59 plus, I am VERY offended by this. Or, if its true, than I'm one sick son of a bitch. I'm waaaaaaay more liberal now than in my youth. I see liberalism as the result of wisdom. Conservatism is the result of selfishness.

No wonder I hate these bastards.

.... I'd never heard the quote before.

To be fair to ol' Trent, he *did* seem like he was fishing for someone to whom to make attribution, but Tweety stepped on him.

4. That's a version of a bullsh*t quote FALSELY attributed to Churchill
I heard that lunatic Ann Coulter even use Churchill's name before spewing it.

The official Churchill website debunks this quote and even says Churchill was more liberal later in life.

"Conservative by the time you're 35"
"If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain." There is no record of anyone hearing Churchill say this. Paul Addison of Edinburgh University makes this comment: "Surely Churchill can't have used the words attributed to him. He'd been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! And would he have talked so disrespectfully of Clemmie, who is generally thought to have been a lifelong Liberal?"

I fell off of my dinosaur the first time I heard it, i.e. it's over 30+ years old.

18. Two great minds...
I can certainly identify with you. I started out as a self sure (cocksure?) conservative, more than half convinced that welfare mothers should be sterilized, that a straight ten percent income tax was right for everybody and, since the Viet Nam war was the first thing I had to face right out of high school, democrats sucked, big time.
As time progressed, over the last 40 years, or so, I had to come up against humanness-and can see how it was that I arranged it so.
My own take is, if these limp brained politicians really do believe in the hereafter, they really ought to get a handle on the lying, torture, disenfranchisement and other sins against god's prize creation and try to act a little more like Jesus!
After all, they're they are gonna be pleading their own cases with him, pretty quick!

Edited on Tue Jun-06-06 04:48 PM by jrw14125
When I'm 60:

- I'll want my social security check
- I'll want that check to be enough to live on comfortably
- I'll want universal health care coverage
- I'll want my prescription drugs covered
- I'll want my dentistry covered
- I'll want to keep my tax dollars and the young adults of my country out of countries where they don't belong
- I'll want science and medical advancements to prolong my life, and make it more comfortable, safe, and healthy
- I'll want so-called Christians to stay out of my nursing home bed
- I'll want to live in a crime-free neighborhood
- I'll want to really be safe from terrorism, not just pay it lip service
- I'll want to be able to hang out with, speak with, and learn from, people of different ethnic groups, cultures, and theological beliefs without fearing for my or their safety
- I'll want global warming to have been curbed, reversed, or completely eliminated
- I'll want to smoke all the grass my old lungs can take
- I'll want to be able to go to a public library, and read as many books as my old eyes can take
- and I'll want those confounded cronies, crooks, and faux-conservatives out of my Government!

And I could've had it all, if it wasn't for those meddling Republicans...

24. Those two old fools discussing abortions, ugh
Neither had to ever worry about having a child alone with no financial help. There are so many other reasons a woman does not want a child that are very important to her. I imagine that most women were not real happy about having an abortion but the alternative was terrible. Those stuffy, superior, know all, pious old men make me ill.

27. The strange thing was
Lott didn't even hear what Chris was saying. Chris was disturbed that younger people were not as pro-choice as people his age are. He was wondering why they were more conservative about it.

Lott heard it wrong and thought Chris was saying the younger people are MORE liberal and for abortion and then made that quote and they didn't get back to the point.

Chris goes to a lot of campus meetings...maybe more conservatives show up? I agree with him that if younger people are less pro-choice, that's a problem.

30. Having just changed channels I only heard a part of the
conversation but did hear the bit about young = dem and older and wiser = repub. and some more blather about it was unbelievable that anyone with any smarts would be for abortion. They were smiling and smirking and being oh so superior. We have no doubt where Prissy Crissy is coming from now days. It would be fun to know which stocks he has put him money into since he is married to the corps.

50. I just listened again
Chris was all friendly with what Lott was saying...but after saying youth were more for gay marriage he did say he found it odd that college people are so much more against abortion than people his age.

So before he laughed along with Lott, who he likes too much, he didn't sound against abortion, he sounded perplexed that as many kids seemed to be.

29. Every birthday I have sees me get a little more radicalized
and this is from somebody who was SDS in the 60s.

I think the problem may be with Vacant Lott's definition of "conservative." It's clear that prig doesn't want to conserve anything but his own personal fortune.

We on the left, on the other hand, work to conserve civil liberties and economic justice, while calling the radical reactionaries on the right who are trashing everything that made this country great to account.

Perhaps if we had a legitimate press, we might get this debate into print or on the air. As it is, we're shut out and the anti Americans have stolen the name conservative as they've stolen the name Christian and there is little we can do about it save talk to people one at a time, changing hearts and minds where we can.

I'm sure of it b/c I abhor everything most "conservatives" stand for. I see a lot of people around my age group changing from liberal to conservative & it's disheartening. Usually they are young, liberal, and once they get out of college & get a job, they get sucked into the conservative corporate mindset. Not me, I'm a union man.
