Son of Capitol Police Chief Assaulted on the Hill
The son of the acting chief of the Capitol Police was assaulted Thursday by a group of juveniles on the Senate side of the Capitol, according to a police report filed June 1.
...
The assault is notable because it occurred during daylight, McGaffin said....

McGaffin said that when his son was pushed, his BlackBerry came off his belt and that when he returned to his office he realized the BlackBerry was missing. When he went back to find it, the device was not there. McGaffin said that because his son could not confirm that the BlackBerry was stolen the crime was considered an assault.

The acting chief indicated that such an attack is highly unusual on Capitol Hill and that police patrolling the area have been notified.
...
The younger McGaffin is not a U.S. Capitol Police employee but instead works through a contract with a private firm to upgrade security systems for the police and other Capitol Hill offices, according to Chief McGaffin....

The office of the Senate sergeant at arms hired the vendor that employs McGaffin, said Becky Daugherty, a spokeswoman for the office. She declined to disclose the name of the vendor.

I know, I know- probably just an unusual daylight assault on Capitol Hill, but it made me wonder: I don't know how Blackberries work. Would the one belonging to someone upgrading security systems for the offices of legislators have valuable information on it?

(Fun fact: the US Park police spokesman's name is Sgt Fear)

1. There has been an increase in assaults on the Capitol Mall...
there were several particularly violent crimes where women were sexually assaulted over Memorial Day weekend. These areas have been traditionally relatively safe compared to the rest of the city. Not sure what it all means.

2. Bad things happen.
Even on the Hill.

Interesting, though, that nepotism was defended
so fiercely in this story.

3. Actually,I think the story stinks....
...but most likely because it is embarassing as hell. This is (I assume) a healthy young male working for a security contractor. In spite of the explanation in the article I believe he was merely beaten up by a group of juveniles FOR his Blackberry, and never fought back for fear that they would either beat him further or introduce a weapon (gun or knife) to the matter,a not unreasonable fear....So instead he later remembers his Blackberry "came off his belt"....in the "passive voice"...I feel sorry for him.
