DeLay Notifies Speaker of June 9 Resignation Date

WASHINGTON - Congressman Tom DeLay (R-Sugar Land) today delivered the following letter to the Speaker of the House announcing his intention to resign his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives effective June 9, 2006. The text of the letter follows.

The Honorable J. Dennis Hastert

Speaker

U.S. House of Representatives

The Capitol Building

Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Mr. Speaker:

It has been a great privilege, a high honor, and one of my most treasured personal pleasures to have served with you and our colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than twenty-one years. You have been a stellar example for our nation of personal courage and steadfast conviction, and I thank you for your leadership of this great institution as well as for your personal friendship.

As you are aware, I have recently made the decision to pursue new opportunities to engage in the important cultural and political battles of our day from an arena outside of the U.S. House of Representatives. As a result, I am informing you of my intention to formally resign as the representative of the 22nd Congressional District of Texas to be effective at the close of business on June 9, 2006.

May God continue to bless you, the President, this great institution and its Members, and our nation.

Sincerely,

Tom DeLay

Member of Congress

1. Glad to see him go!
At the same time, it is a little...unsettling to know he can rum amok as an un-checked operative. Here's hoping his "liberation" lands him in the slammer!

2. You mean, all this time he's been free? Will he get a gold watch?
or maybe a gold soapdish would be more appropriate.
And should he be speaking of "personal pleasures" at a time like this?

8. Tom Delay: The Movie
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 02:33 PM by welshTerrier2
i've been active in my town providing some help getting a progressive documentary film series off the ground ... our attendance, after a pretty slow start, has been steadily growing ...

we show the films at the town library once a month ... the discussions after the films are worth the price of gold ... imagine an army of DU'ers getting to say their piece to "real people" ... it's amazing ...

if you make your case, you get a whole lot of "hmmmmmm ... you know, i think you're right ... i've never thought about it that way before" ... it's a great way to spread the word and teach others about what you've learned on DU ...

this month, we're showing a movie about Delay ...

with a simple call to your local library, maybe you could do the same ... don't present it as some kind of left wing, anti-bush film series ... just call it a documentary film series ... if you provide the film, they're less likely to try to control the content ...

if we don't educate our neighbors, nothing will change ...
