10. Absolutely!!!
A red herring distraction issue, pulled out for the sole purpose of breathing life into his withering poll ratings!

4. Framing, folks... framing!!
"Bush comes out for anti-marriage rights amendment."

This isn't just about gay people. It's about government telling the American people who they can and can't marry...

5. I think the proper framing is about bigotry
I don't think we need to be chickenshit about having a pro-gay marriage platform.

Almost everyone knows people who are gay and anyone with a conscience couldn't look them in the eye and tell them that they have a good reason to deny them the right to marriage.

We've lost two elections by campaigning as moderate Republicans. Let's energize people to listen to their better angels, not finessing our platforms like the tweezers in a game of Operation.

6. Of course it's about bigotry.
Isn't that very definition of denying a right to all Americans? The Civil Rights Movement wasn't called "The Negro Rights Movement."

(And by the way, I think it's against the rules to call a fellow DUer a "chickenshit.")

7. I wasn't calling *you* c-shit
I was criticizing the contorted way that Democratic party leadership has signaled its sympathy to the gay community while still grandfathering an amendmentless "marriage-is-one-man-and-one-woman" platform, in the manner that Kerry did.

As to framing, spin usually comes in two flavors -- how you frame the other guy's platform (concrete and negative), and how you frame yours (thematic and positive).

If anyone thinks that's dirty pool, let's see how the other side does it: Anti-abortion people call their opposition "baby killers," while calling themselves "pro-life."

When discussing Bush's policies, I'd suggest they be called out as "gay-bashing" and "bigoted." Our position might well be themed as "freedom of marriage."

9. Crusade?
When have we ever looked back and regretted giving equal rights to people?

It's hard for a time to convince people that the sky won't fall when you do so, but it always has the ring of decency when it finally happens.

lose all the worldly goods she and her partner worked a lifetime for to a family that didn't give a rat's ass about her partner and you might get the idea why this is a crusade on our side.
