Most people agree that our system of politics and government is badly corrupted. And the worst thing is that our two-party system has an integral part in maintaining that corruption. Here is a real opportunity to change that, probably the best opportunity to set things right since the American Revolution! Here we have the opportunity to re-empower the people as they were empowered originally to establish the U.S. Constitution.
Mike Gravel, the former U.S. Senator from Alaska (1969 to 1981) and the founder of the National Initiative for Democracy, has announced his candidacy for President of the United States on the Democratic ticket. The
Mike Gravel for President 2008 website lists several issues that most people are concerned about on his agenda (such as the Iraq war, healthcare, and others), but his most significant agenda issue is promoting the National Initiative. His campaign slogan is
“Let the People Decide”!As we have seen, especially for the last several years, the people have had no voice in the direction our country has taken. Millions of people marched against a proposed war before it happened (a sight never seen before anywhere), and were ignored. Time and again during major political events protesters were fenced away from the events in “free speech zones”! Isn't our whole country supposed to be a “free speech zone” according to the Constitution? What is wrong with this picture? It is illegal – that's what!
We, the people, must not shy away from taking responsibility for our own futures and along with that the future of our beloved country. We must be willing to participate in the major decisions that impact all Americans. But without democracy, those corporate elites who are running things today will continue to follow corporate agendas rather than the people's agenda. And the corporations determine what we see and hear in the media.
We can change our country for the better, and by example show the rest of the world what real democracy can do. Support Mike Gravel for President and the National Initiative for your own empowerment! Politics is serious business, folks! It is up to us – all of us!
