I've sent this out for publication. I know it's too long for ltte sections but I just couldn't edit it any further. It felt cathartic just to type it.
Has our Government lost it's collective mind? Six years into the Bush Administration and we are becoming less safe everyday while the President joyrides in a dune buggy in the desert. Our ports are wide open and barely a container gets inspected. The answer? Try to turn our port security over to a country that has helped terrorists in the past. When that brilliant idea failed, the next logical step will most likely be to open it up to the lowest bidder. That makes me feel better. Give it to whomever can do it the cheapest. I'm sure Halliburton has a few more ways to overcharge us up their sleeves and V.P. Cheney could use the spare cash if he can stay awake long enough to accept it and not shoot the guy delivering to to him. For half of a century, people have been stepping onto the soil that is America in order to try to make a better life for themselves and suddenly just before the upcoming election it appears we have never had a law on the books to deal with regulating immigration and it has become a very serious pressing problem facing the voters. And how did that happen? Can you say- Karl Rove? The rocket scientist running the show in D.C. decides the best plan is to post on our Mexican border some of the extra National Guard that are not busy fighting in 2 wars to evidently bring coffee and magazines to the Border Patrol Agents who have had their numbers and budget slashed for the last six years. They will not be allowed to arrest, interfere or detain anyone, just spot them and try to locate someone who can arrest them. The rest of the plan involves defense contractors raking in the big bucks to fly unmanned drones which crash regularly and huge blimps tethered to the ground that shouldn't be susceptible to a kid with a slingshot. As for our Northern border, everything seems to be okay there except for the fact that the ONLY terrorist captured trying to cross the border during the Bush's 2 terms was captured crossing from Canada. As importantly, they have managed to extend tax cuts to the wealthiest people in our country while running up record deficits and funding 2 wars on the backs of our grandchildren. The first war was to capture the guy who launched a deadly terror attack on our country while Bush was ignoring intelligence and people from the prior administration that told him it was going to happen. And the second war was launched because, well that's any body's guess. Both have been going on for years with "special supplemental appropriations" that after all this time can not seem to make their way into any kind of regular budget. Do these wars come as a surprise to the lawmakers each time they need more funding? There are officially 9 countries that have nuclear weapons. Iran is not one of them. Who are we threatening to bomb with our own? Bingo! But evidently the most hideous thing going on in America is being decided in the backroom basement meetings away from the scrutiny of the public. Constitutional amendments are being discussed and possibly voted on to thwart that scourge of society that may tear the fabric of this country to shreds. That's right, if we do not stop this before the election, some gay person might be able to collect insurance if their life partner dies, just like some "normal" people do. Woe is me. Sanity hearings will be held in November of 06 and 08. Please attend.
